Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, offers the most comfortable conditions for walking the trails and the easiest RV driving on mountain roads. Summer brings cool shade under the dense hemlock canopy, while autumn showcases vivid hardwood color among the evergreens. Shoulder seasons in April and November can be wet, muddy, and frosty, so RVers should watch the forecast for freezing overnight temperatures. Winter visits are possible for day use, but snow, ice, and short daylight hours make travel on U.S. Route 50 challenging.
Cold and snowy; trails open but icy, plan for winter driving on Route 50.

Pleasant hiking weather; green-up under the hemlocks.
Warm days, cool shaded trails; afternoon thunderstorms possible.
Peak summer; humid but the old-growth canopy keeps trails cool.

The Giant Hemlock Trail is a short, easy path that passes some of the largest old-growth eastern hemlocks in the park. It offers an accessible introduction to the virgin forest for RV travelers making a quick stop along Route 50.
The Cathedral Trail is the park's signature walking route, winding beneath towering hemlocks and hardwoods along Rhine Creek. Expect soft, shaded footing and interpretive signage describing the old-growth ecosystem.
Partridge Berry Trail is a quiet side loop popular with birders and families. The flat grade and short distance make it suitable for most visitors after a long RV drive.
Cathedral State Park maintains picnic tables and a shelter near the main parking area. It is a convenient lunch stop for RVers crossing the Alleghenies on U.S. Route 50.
The park's mossy understory, large-diameter hemlocks, and Rhine Creek make it a rewarding photography destination. Soft, filtered light under the canopy is especially good on overcast days.
The old-growth hemlock-hardwood habitat supports woodland songbirds, woodpeckers, and small mammals. Quiet early-morning walks from the day-use lot offer the best viewing.

Cathedral State Park, WV, United States
The park entrance sits along U.S. Route 50 near Aurora in Preston County, West Virginia. From Morgantown, West Virginia, it is roughly a one-hour drive southeast (about 45 miles), and from Cumberland, Maryland, it is about 50 miles west, also around one hour. RV drivers should expect winding, two-lane mountain highway with long grades and sharp curves on Route 50 through the Alleghenies, including the climb over Cheat Mountain and Allegheny Front, and should fuel up in larger towns since services are limited. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Morgantown Municipal, Pittsburgh International, and Hagerstown Regional.
