Best time to visit Coleman State Park

Late June through early September is the most reliable window, with warm days, cool nights, and the campground fully operational. July and August bring the warmest weather and the best paddling and fishing conditions on Little Diamond Pond, but blackflies and mosquitoes peak in June. Early September is a strong shoulder option for RV travelers who want cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, and the start of fall color across the North Country. Snow, mud season, and limited services make spring and late fall poor choices for RV travel here.

Things to do at Coleman State Park

  • Paddle Little Diamond Pond Easy
    RV parking available

Little Diamond Pond is a small, quiet pond at the heart of Coleman State Park and is ideal for canoes, kayaks, and small non-motorized craft. The park has a launch area, and calm mornings are especially good for wildlife watching. RVers can unload paddlecraft close to the shoreline.

  • Trout fishing Easy
    RV parking available

Little Diamond Pond and nearby Big Diamond Pond are stocked brook trout waters popular with fly and spin anglers. Shoreline access, a boat launch, and easy pond circumnavigation make this one of the top reasons to camp at Coleman. A New Hampshire fishing license is required.

  • Hike park and Nash Stream area trails Moderate
    RV parking available

Short walking trails loop around Little Diamond Pond and connect to old woods roads through spruce-fir forest. More experienced hikers can drive a short distance to Nash Stream Forest and the Cohos Trail for longer routes. Trails are generally rustic with limited signage.

  • Wildlife and moose watching Easy
    RV parking available

The Connecticut Lakes region around Coleman State Park is one of the best places in New Hampshire to see moose, especially at dawn and dusk along Route 145 and Diamond Pond Road. Beaver, loons, and a variety of songbirds are also common in and around the pond. Drive slowly on rural roads, as moose collisions are a real risk.

  • Day trip to the Connecticut Lakes Easy
    RV parking available

The four Connecticut Lakes lie a short drive north of Coleman along US Route 3 toward Pittsburg and the Canadian border. Visitors can fish, paddle, and pull off at scenic overlooks including the headwaters of the Connecticut River. Pullouts and day-use areas generally accommodate tow vehicles and smaller RVs.

  • Mountain biking and gravel riding Moderate
    RV parking available

Quiet backroads and forest roads around Stewartstown and Dixville offer long, low-traffic gravel rides straight from the campground. Riders should carry tools, water, and a map, as cell service is unreliable. The terrain ranges from rolling to steep.

  • Hunting in season Moderate
    RV parking available

Coleman State Park and surrounding public lands are used for regulated hunting of deer, moose (by permit), grouse, and other species under New Hampshire Fish and Game rules. RV campers should check current season dates and wear blaze orange on trails during fall hunts. Target shooting is not permitted within the park.
