Things to do at Cowan Lake State Park

  • Boating on Cowan Lake
    RV parking available

Cowan Lake is a 692-acre no-wake reservoir with a 10 horsepower limit, making it ideal for sailing, pontoons, kayaks, and canoes. A full-service marina on the north shore offers seasonal rentals and launch access. Public boat ramps have ample paved parking suitable for vehicles towing an RV trailer.

  • Lotus Cove Trail Easy

Lotus Cove Trail is a short, scenic loop on the north side of the lake that passes through shoreline wetlands where American lotus blooms in summer. The path is mostly flat, well-marked, and family-friendly. Parking at the trailhead can accommodate tow vehicles but not large motorhomes.

  • Fishing Cowan Lake
    RV parking available

Cowan Lake is a popular Ohio fishery for largemouth bass, muskellunge, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish. Shore fishing is accessible from multiple pullouts, fishing piers, and the dam area. A valid Ohio fishing license is required.

  • Swimming Beach Easy
    RV parking available

The public swim beach on the south shore offers a sandy area, shallow roped swimming zone, restrooms, and picnic facilities. It is open seasonally without a lifeguard on duty. The beach parking lot has space for oversized vehicles.

  • Dogwood Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

Dogwood Trail is a wooded hike near the campground through mature hardwoods with spring wildflowers and flowering dogwoods. The route is moderate with rolling terrain and some roots. Campers can access it directly from the camping area, avoiding a separate drive.

  • Campground Disc Golf and Day-Use Areas
    RV parking available

The park includes a disc golf course and multiple picnic shelters scattered across day-use areas. Shelters can be reserved in advance and have nearby parking. The open fields and playground make this a good rainy-day backup and family hub.

  • Cottage Area Shoreline Walk Easy

A network of quiet park roads and informal shoreline paths near the family cottages offers easy lake views and birdwatching. The area is good for evening strolls and photography. RV parking is limited to nearby day-use lots rather than the cottage loop itself.

How to get to Cowan Lake State Park

The park is in southwest Ohio off State Route 350, about 8 miles southwest of Wilmington and roughly 50 miles northeast of Cincinnati (about a one-hour drive) and 55 miles southwest of Columbus. Most RVers arrive via I-71, exiting at Wilmington and following SR 73 and SR 350 on paved two-lane roads with no tunnels or significant grades. The final approach includes a few tight turns and a narrow causeway near the campground entrance, so large Class A rigs should take corners slowly. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International (CVG) and John Glenn Columbus International (CMH).
