Things to do at Darling State Park

  • Burke Mountain Toll Road Easy

The Burke Mountain Toll Road is a paved auto road that climbs from the park entrance to the summit area of Burke Mountain. It offers one of the easiest ways in Vermont to reach a 3,000-foot summit by vehicle. The road is narrow, steep, and restricted to smaller vehicles, so RV travelers should use a tow vehicle.

  • Burke Mountain Summit Views Easy

The summit area offers panoramic views across the Northeast Kingdom, including Lake Willoughby, Jay Peak, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. A short walk from the upper parking area leads to viewpoints and a historic fire tower lookout.

  • CCC Road Hiking Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The CCC Road is a wide, walkable route built by the Civilian Conservation Corps that climbs the mountain from the toll road area. It is a popular hiking and trail-running option with a steady grade and forested cover. Allow several hours for a round trip on foot.

  • Profile Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

Profile Trail is a single-track hiking path that connects with the Burke Mountain trail network and climbs toward the summit. It passes through mixed northern hardwood forest with occasional rock outcrops. Sturdy footwear is recommended.

  • Picnicking at the Base Area Easy
    RV parking available

The base area of the park has picnic sites under the forest canopy, making it a convenient day-stop for RV travelers touring the Northeast Kingdom. Facilities are rustic, with tables and limited amenities.

  • Kingdom Trails Mountain Biking (nearby) Moderate
    RV parking available

The renowned Kingdom Trails network in East Burke is within minutes of the park and offers more than 100 miles of purpose-built mountain bike singletrack. Day passes are required and sold in the village. Trailhead parking lots accommodate smaller vehicles, so larger rigs should stage in designated lots.

  • Lake Willoughby (nearby) Easy
    RV parking available

Lake Willoughby, about 20 minutes north of the park, is a glacial lake flanked by the cliffs of Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor. It offers swimming, paddling, and hiking at nearby Willoughby State Forest. The lake is a popular add-on for RV travelers already visiting Darling State Park.
