How to get to Echo Lake State Park

The park is located off West Side Road in North Conway, roughly a 5 minute drive from the village center and about 1 hour 20 minutes north of Portland, Maine, or 2 hours 30 minutes north of Boston via I-93 and the Kancamagus Highway or Route 16. RV drivers should note that the Kancamagus Highway (Route 112) includes steep grades and sharp curves crossing the White Mountains, and the Cathedral Ledge auto road inside the park is narrow, steep, and not suitable for large motorhomes or trailers. Portland International Jetport (PWM) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, with Manchester-Boston Regional (MHT) and Boston Logan (BOS) as larger alternatives.

Best time to visit Echo Lake State Park

Late June through early September is the best window to visit, when the swim beach is staffed, water temperatures are comfortable, and the Cathedral Ledge auto road is fully open. Late September into early October brings peak fall foliage in the Mount Washington Valley, with cooler days that are ideal for hiking the lake loop and the ledges. Shoulder-season RV travelers should expect reduced services, and the auto road to Cathedral Ledge typically closes once snow arrives and reopens in spring.

Things to do at Echo Lake State Park

  • Echo Lake Beach Easy
    RV parking available

Echo Lake Beach is a sandy day-use swim beach on a small mountain lake framed by the granite walls of Cathedral Ledge and White Horse Ledge. Lifeguards are typically on duty during the summer season, and picnic tables line the shoreline.

  • Echo Lake Loop Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The Echo Lake Loop is a roughly one-mile flat trail that circles the lake with continuous views of the cliffs above. It is family-friendly and a good leg-stretcher for RVers between longer White Mountain hikes.

  • Cathedral Ledge Overlook Easy

Cathedral Ledge is a granite cliff rising several hundred feet above the lake, with a paved auto road climbing to an overlook at the summit. The view takes in Echo Lake, the Saco River valley, and Mount Washington on clear days.

  • Rock Climbing at Cathedral and White Horse Ledges Strenuous
    RV parking available

Cathedral Ledge and White Horse Ledge are among the premier traditional rock climbing venues in the northeastern United States. The cliffs offer multi-pitch granite routes for experienced climbers, with guide services available in North Conway.

  • Bryce Path to White Horse Ledge Moderate
    RV parking available

A steeper hiking option leaves the Echo Lake area and climbs to the top of White Horse Ledge for expansive valley views. Expect rock slabs and exposed ledges near the top, and allow a few hours round trip.

  • Picnicking on the Lakeshore Easy
    RV parking available

Shaded picnic tables and grills are arranged along the lakeshore near the parking area. The setting is ideal for an RV day trip lunch between exploring North Conway and the White Mountains.

  • Paddling on Echo Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Echo Lake is small and protected, making it well suited to kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. Motorized boats are not the focus here, and the calm water reflects the surrounding cliffs on still mornings.
