Late May through September is the most comfortable window, with warm days, dry gravel access roads, and the best fishing conditions on the Oswegatchie River. July and August bring peak summer weather and the longest daylight for shoreline picnics. September and early October offer cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, and fall color across the St. Lawrence Valley. Winter visits are limited because North Country snow and ice make the park's unpaved access difficult for RVs.

Eel Weir is primarily an angler's park with shoreline access to the Oswegatchie River. The river holds warm-water species such as smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and panfish, and a valid New York State fishing license is required.
The park's picnic area offers tables and shade trees along the riverbank, making it a convenient lunch stop for RV travelers touring the St. Lawrence Valley. Facilities are basic, so bring your own water and pack out trash.
Informal footpaths wind through mixed hardwood forest along the river. These paths are flat and short, suitable for a post-drive stretch rather than a destination hike.
The Oswegatchie corridor supports herons, kingfishers, osprey, waterfowl, and white-tailed deer. Early morning and evening visits offer the best sightings from the quieter sections of shoreline.
Ogdensburg is the closest full-service town, about 15 minutes away on the St. Lawrence River. Visitors can tour the Frederic Remington Art Museum, refuel, and reprovision before returning to a nearby campground.
Eel Weir pairs well with a longer loop along the St. Lawrence Seaway west toward Alexandria Bay and the Thousand Islands region. Expect roughly a one to one and a half hour drive on US Route 37.
It was a great experience- they were flexible on timing of pick up and drop off, and had the option to leave out car in their driveway. They were easy to communicate with and very responsive. Really nice people and would definitely rent from them again.

Eel Weir State Park, NY, United States
The park is roughly a 15 minute drive southeast of Ogdensburg via County Route 4, about 30 minutes from Canton and just over an hour from Watertown via US Route 11 and NY Route 68. RV drivers should expect narrow rural county roads, a short gravel park access road, and limited turnaround space, so larger rigs should scout on foot before committing. There are no mountain passes or tunnels on the approach, but winter storms regularly close or ice over secondary roads. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Ogdensburg International Airport (OGS), with larger options at Syracuse Hancock International (SYR) about two and a half hours south.
