Late May through early October is the prime window, when campground loops are fully open, water levels are stable, and warm temperatures suit boating and swimming. September and early October bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fall color across the oak ridges, which is ideal for RV travelers who prefer quieter sites. Spring visits in April and early May can be beautiful but watch for muddy trails and occasional storms. Winter visits are limited as most services wind down and weather can be harsh.

Lake Red Rock is Iowa's largest lake and the main draw at Elk Rock State Park. Boat ramps within the park provide direct access for anglers targeting walleye, crappie, white bass, and catfish. The lake is also popular for water skiing and pontoon cruising during summer.
Elk Rock is one of the premier horse-friendly state parks in Iowa and includes a dedicated equestrian campground. Multi-use trails wind through wooded ridges and along the lake. Riders should check trail conditions after heavy rain.
The park offers several miles of multi-use trails shared with horses, passing through oak and hickory forest and opening to views of Lake Red Rock. Footing can be uneven with roots and short climbs.
Day-use picnic areas sit on bluffs and coves along the lake, with tables, grills, and restrooms. Informal swimming is possible from several shoreline access points, though there is no lifeguarded beach.
Lake Red Rock is a migratory corridor and hosts bald eagles, pelicans, herons, and waterfowl through much of the year. Early morning drives along the park road often turn up white-tailed deer and wild turkey.
Just across the lake from Elk Rock, Cordova Park features a 170-foot observation tower with sweeping views of Lake Red Rock and the surrounding hills. The tower is a short drive from the state park and offers additional picnic areas.
The paved Volksweg Trail runs near Lake Red Rock and connects recreation areas between Pella and the dam. It is a smooth, family-friendly ride accessible from trailheads a short drive from Elk Rock State Park.
Always an easy booking and great service!

Jerry exceeded our expectations with the delivery and set up of our camper. He was there early with the ac on and cold water in the fridge! He explained how to use everything inside and out, from the stove, water supply, propane, extra supplies and even provided extra treats and a fresh flower bouquet! He was easy to communicate with, knowledgeable about the campground and even checked in later in our stay to make sure we didn’t need anything. We’ll definitely be renting again from Jerry in the near future!! Thank you again for making our long getaway weekend so enjoyable!

Elk Rock State Park, IA, United States
Elk Rock State Park sits off Highway 14 between Knoxville and Pella in Marion County. Des Moines is roughly 45 miles to the northwest, about a one-hour drive, while Iowa City is about 100 miles east via Interstate 80 and Highway 14. Roads into the park are paved and generally RV-friendly, though the final approach includes rolling grades and a few sharp curves near the campground entrances, so larger rigs should drive cautiously. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Des Moines International Airport (DSM).
