The park is located on California Highway 1, approximately 35 miles north of San Luis Obispo (50-minute drive) and 29 miles west of Paso Robles via Highway 46. The town of Cambria is 10 miles south, offering supplies and services. San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is the closest major airport at 37 miles south. Monterey Regional Airport is about 94 miles north for additional fly-and-rent options. Highway 1 is a scenic but winding coastal road with steep grades through the Big Sur area; RVs are limited to 35 feet maximum length.
Spring through early fall (April through October) offers the best weather for camping and outdoor activities, with mild temperatures and minimal rainfall. Summer months (June-August) are warmest but often feature morning coastal fog that typically clears by afternoon, making late afternoon hikes ideal. Winter (December-March) showcases peak elephant seal breeding and molting season at nearby Piedras Blancas, though weather is cooler and wetter. September and October provide shoulder-season conditions with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds than peak summer.

A free year-round accessible viewing area located 7 miles north of the park features platforms with stunning views of thousands of elephant seals in their natural habitat. This 4.3-mile out-and-back beach hike features stunning ocean views, rugged cliffs, and San Simeon Pier with opportunities to spot seals, sea otters, and migrating whales. The opulent Hearst Castle estate, located near the park, offers guided tours of the historic mansion, guest houses, and spectacular gardens built by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst.
