Late June through August is the prime window, with warm days suited to swimming, paddling, and beach time on Lake Winnipeg and consistently open campground services. Early September delivers quieter sites, cooler nights, and strong birdwatching as migration picks up along the marshes. Shoulder months of May and late September can be pleasant but bring cool temperatures, bugs in spring, and limited services in late fall. Winter transforms the park into a snowshoe and cross-country skiing destination, though most RV facilities are closed.

This short, easy walk leads to the historic Gull Harbour Lighthouse at the north tip of Hecla Island. The flat path offers sweeping views of Lake Winnipeg and is a good choice for a sunset stroll from the nearby campground.
Grassy Narrows is a network of boardwalks and viewing towers through one of the most productive wetlands on Lake Winnipeg. Birdwatchers can spot herons, pelicans, grebes, and dozens of waterfowl species during spring and fall migration.
Hecla Village is a preserved Icelandic settlement with interpretive displays showcasing the park's unique cultural heritage. Self-guided walking tours pass restored homes, a church, and a fish station dating to the original late-1800s community.
West Quarry is a forested loop on the west side of Hecla Island that passes old limestone quarry sites once used by settlers. The trail is mostly level and works well for a moderate hike or mountain bike ride.
The sandy beach at Gull Harbour offers shallow, sheltered swimming on Lake Winnipeg. Picnic areas, washrooms, and the adjacent marina make it a convenient day-use base for RV families camped nearby.
Hecla Island's sheltered bays are a launch point for kayaking, canoeing, and motorboating on Lake Winnipeg. The Gull Harbour Marina offers boat launches and moorage, and calm mornings along the east shore are ideal for flatwater paddlers.
A dedicated viewing tower on Hecla Island gives visitors a high vantage point over meadows where moose, white-tailed deer, and waterfowl are often seen. Dawn and dusk are the best times for sightings.

Hecla/Grindstone Provincial Park, MB, Canada
From Winnipeg, follow Highway 8 north roughly 165 km (about a 2 to 2.5 hour drive) to the Hecla Island causeway. Gimli, the nearest sizable town with fuel and groceries, sits about 75 km south of the park entrance. The route is a paved, two-lane provincial highway with no tunnels or mountain passes, making it straightforward for large RVs, though drivers should watch for wildlife, strong crosswinds through the open Interlake, and reduced services once past Riverton. Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travellers.
