Late May through early October is the most reliable window for RV travel in the Highgate area, with warm days, leaf-out, and active birdlife on Missisquoi Bay. July and August bring the warmest swimming and paddling conditions but also the busiest weekends at nearby campgrounds, so reservations are recommended. Mid-September through mid-October delivers strong fall foliage across Franklin County with cooler nights and fewer bugs, a popular shoulder season for RVers. Late fall through early spring is cold, wet, and often snowy, and most regional campgrounds are closed.

Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge is a federal refuge on the Missisquoi River delta just minutes from Highgate, protecting more than 6,700 acres of wetlands, floodplain forest, and waterfowl habitat. Visitors can walk the Maquam/Black Creek and Discovery trails, paddle the Missisquoi River, and watch migrating ducks, geese, and great blue herons. The main visitor area in Swanton has RV-friendly parking. fws.gov/refuge/missisquoi
Lake Champlain's Missisquoi Bay offers calm, shallow water ideal for kayaks, canoes, and small boats launched from public access areas around Highgate Springs and Swanton. The bay is known for largemouth bass, pike, and panfish. Several town and state boat launches in the area have space for trucks with trailers.
Burton Island State Park is a car-free island park accessed by passenger ferry from Kill Kare State Park in St. Albans Bay, about 30 minutes from Highgate. Visitors can hike, swim, and picnic on the island, while parking the RV on the mainland at the Kill Kare lot. It makes a low-effort day trip for travelers basing in the Highgate area. vtstateparks.com/burton.html
The Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail is a 26.5-mile multi-use path running from St. Albans through Sheldon and Enosburg Falls to Richford, paralleling the Missisquoi River for much of its length. The crushed-stone surface is suitable for biking, walking, and in winter for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Trailheads with parking are located in several villages near Highgate. fpr.vermont.gov/recreation/trails
Kill Kare State Park sits on a point in St. Albans Bay with swimming, picnicking, and ferry service to Burton Island. It is a quick drive south from Highgate and offers a sandy swim area and shoreline views across Lake Champlain. Day-use parking can accommodate tow vehicles but is tight for larger motorhomes on busy weekends. vtstateparks.com/killkare.html
Highgate Falls is a scenic cascade on the Missisquoi River in the village of Highgate Falls, a short drive from the state park parcel. The historic iron bridge above the falls offers a quick roadside photo stop, and the surrounding river corridor is popular for flatwater paddling upstream of the falls. Parking is limited to small pull-offs, so large RVs should visit by tow vehicle.
Highgate Springs is one of Vermont's main ports of entry to Canada, placing Montreal within roughly an hour's drive via Autoroute 133 and A-10. RV travelers with passports can easily make a day trip to the Eastern Townships or the Montreal waterfront. Plan ahead for border wait times and review restrictions on firewood, produce, and firearms before crossing.

Highgate State Park, VT, United States
Highgate sits just off Interstate 89 near Exit 21 in northwestern Vermont, roughly 10 minutes from Swanton, about 45 minutes (35 miles) north of Burlington, and under 90 minutes (about 65 miles) south of Montreal. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Burlington International Airport (BTV), with Montréal-Trudeau (YUL) as an international option for Canadian renters. I-89 is a straightforward, grade-friendly route for RVs, but travelers crossing into Canada should check length, propane, and documentation requirements at the Highgate Springs port of entry. Secondary roads in the Missisquoi delta are flat but narrow in places, so large rigs should stick to numbered state routes when possible.
