Best time to visit Holliday Lake State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, is the most popular window, with warm weather ideal for swimming, paddling, and lake-based recreation. Summer days can be hot and humid in central Virginia, so shaded campsites and lakeside breezes are welcome. Shoulder seasons in April and October offer cooler nights, fewer crowds, and strong fall color from the surrounding hardwood forest. Winter visits are quiet and suited to hiking and fishing, though beach and concession services are closed.

Things to do at Holliday Lake State Park

  • Lakeshore Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The Lakeshore Trail is a scenic loop that circles the 150-acre Holliday Lake, running about 5 miles with gentle terrain. It offers steady water views, shaded hardwood forest, and access to quiet fishing spots. RV renters can leave rigs at the main campground or day-use lot and walk straight to the trailhead.

  • Swimming Beach
    RV parking available

A guarded sand swimming beach sits on the lake near the visitor center and is open seasonally, typically Memorial Day through Labor Day. Changing facilities and a concession stand operate during the summer season. Day-use parking is RV-friendly.

  • Boating and Paddling Easy
    RV parking available

The park rents canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and rowboats in season for use on the electric-motor-only lake. Visitors may also launch their own small, non-gas-powered boats from the public ramp. The calm water is well suited to beginners and families.

  • Fishing Easy
    RV parking available

Holliday Lake supports largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, with bank and boat fishing both popular. A valid Virginia freshwater fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Fishing piers and shoreline access points are within walking distance of the campground.

  • Saunders Creek and Dogwood Ridge Trails Easy
    RV parking available

These shorter forested footpaths loop through the pine and hardwood uplands above the lake and link to the Lakeshore Trail for longer routes. Trails are mostly natural surface with modest elevation change. Trailheads are accessible from the main park road.

  • Appomattox Court House National Historical Park
    RV parking available

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, about 25 miles away, preserves the site where the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in the McLean House signaled the effective end of the Civil War. The reconstructed village and visitor center make it a popular day trip from the campground. RV parking is available at the main visitor lot. nps.gov/apco/index.htm

  • Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest Moderate

Holliday Lake State Park is embedded within the 19,000-acre Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, which offers additional miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The surrounding forest also provides seasonal hunting opportunities outside the park boundary. Access points branch off the roads leading to the park.

How to get to Holliday Lake State Park

The park sits off Holliday Lake Road in Appomattox County, about 25 minutes (roughly 20 miles) from the town of Appomattox and about 45 miles east of Lynchburg via US-460 and rural state routes. Richmond is approximately 90 miles east, and Charlottesville is about 70 miles north. The final approach follows narrow, winding two-lane county roads through the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, so larger motorhomes and travel trailers should drive slowly and watch for tight curves, low-hanging branches, and limited turnaround space. Lynchburg Regional Airport is the closest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips, with Richmond International also within easy driving distance.
