Gecko is the main developed camping area along Gecko Road. Gecko Campground is the largest campground in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, consisting of a north loop and a south loop with paved roads and numerous vault toilets. - Explore North Algodones Dunes Wilderness Strenuous
A quiet, non-motorized counterpart to the busy south dunes. The North Algodones Dunes Wilderness offers a tranquil alternative to the fast-paced action of the main dunes, encompassing more than 26,000 acres, with the largest and tallest dunes located in the central area. Access to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is best made along Highway 78 east of Brawley, California or along Interstate 8 west of Yuma, Arizona. From San Diego the drive is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours east on I-8, and Yuma, Arizona sits about 30 minutes east of the Grays Well Road exit. The area is accessible from Highway 78 in the Glamis area and off Interstate 8 at the Grays Well Road exit. Yuma International Airport is the closest fly-and-rent option; RV drivers should watch for blowing sand on desert highways, soft shoulders off Gecko Road, and the need to stay off pavement edges when parking.
