Best time to visit Keewaydin State Park

Late June through early September is the prime window, when the campground, pool, and marina are fully operational and daytime highs are comfortable for swimming and boating. July and August bring the warmest river temperatures and the liveliest Alexandria Bay scene, but sites book up quickly on weekends. Early June and September are quieter shoulder periods with cooler nights and fewer bugs, ideal for RVers who prefer open sites and easier reservations. The park campground closes for the winter season, so late fall through early spring is not suitable for overnight RV stays.

Things to do at Keewaydin State Park

  • St. Lawrence River Boating and Marina
    RV parking available

The Keewaydin marina provides a boat launch, seasonal slips, and direct access to the Thousand Islands boating grounds. RVers can tow boats to the park and use the launch as a day-base for cruising among the islands. Boating is the signature activity at Keewaydin.

  • Park Swimming Pool Easy
    RV parking available

Keewaydin operates a seasonal outdoor swimming pool rather than a river beach, offering safer swimming away from shipping channels. The pool is open during the summer months with lifeguards on duty. It is an easy walk from the campground loops.

  • St. Lawrence River Fishing
    RV parking available

The Thousand Islands stretch of the St. Lawrence is one of New York's top fisheries for smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and muskellunge. Anglers can fish from the park shoreline or launch a boat at the marina. A New York State fishing license is required.

  • Boldt Castle Day Trip Easy

Boldt Castle on Heart Island is one of the Thousand Islands' most famous attractions and is reached by tour boat from nearby Alexandria Bay. RVers can park in town or at the park and take a shuttle boat to the island. The castle grounds include turreted stonework, gardens, and a yacht house.

  • Minna Anthony Common Nature Center at Wellesley Island Easy
    RV parking available

A short drive north across the Thousand Islands Bridge leads to the largest nature center in the New York State Park system, with more than 8 miles of trails through woods, wetlands, and river bluffs. The center offers exhibits, interpretive programs, and wildlife viewing. Trailhead parking accommodates trucks and smaller RVs.

  • Seaway Trail Scenic Drive
    RV parking available

NY Route 12 along the park is part of the Great Lakes Seaway Trail, a National Scenic Byway that follows the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario shoreline. The route links Keewaydin with Cape Vincent, Sackets Harbor, and additional waterfront state parks. It is a straightforward drive for RVs with numerous pull-offs and viewpoints.

  • Picnicking and Shoreline Walking Easy
    RV parking available

Keewaydin offers picnic tables, pavilions, and mowed lawns along the St. Lawrence shoreline with views of passing freighters and pleasure craft. Short walking paths connect the campground, pool, and waterfront. The flat terrain makes it accessible for most visitors.
