Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel, with mild temperatures, blooming dogwoods in April, and vivid oak and hickory color in October and November. Summer brings warm, humid days that are ideal for swimming and lake activities, though afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winter is quiet with bare-forest lake views and occasional freezing nights, and some services operate on reduced hours. Holiday weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day tend to book out early.

The park is the official western start of the Ozark Highlands Trail, a long-distance route through the Ozark National Forest. Starting at Lake Fort Smith State Park on Arkansas 71, the trail crosses the forest toward the Buffalo National River, with trailhead parking available at several locations along the route. Day hikers can sample the first few miles and return to the park. fs.usda.gov/recarea/osfnf/recreation/hiking/recarea?actid=50&recid=43467
Lake Fort Smith is a protected reservoir popular for bass, bream, and catfish fishing from kayaks, canoes, or electric-motor boats. Gas motors are prohibited because the lake supplies drinking water, keeping the water quiet and clear. Small-craft rentals are often available seasonally at the park marina.
The park operates a seasonal swimming pool with a splash area, offering a family-friendly alternative to lake swimming. The pool typically runs from late spring through early fall, with hours posted at the visitor center.
Short in-park loop trails wind through hardwood forest and along creek drainages, climbing to ridgeline views of the lake. These routes are a good warm-up for longer Ozark Highlands Trail sections and are accessible from the main trailhead parking area.
The modern visitor center houses interpretive exhibits on the lake, Boston Mountains geology, and area wildlife. It also serves as the staging point for ranger-led hikes, kayak programs, and junior ranger activities. RV parking is available on site.
Picnic sites with tables and grills are set on bluffs above Lake Fort Smith, offering panoramic views across the water to the surrounding mountains. The area is a relaxed stop for a midday break between hikes or paddles.
The park sits at the doorstep of the Ozark National Forest, with scenic drives reaching waterfalls, wilderness overlooks, and the Pig Trail Scenic Byway within an hour. Rigs over 30 feet should plan routes carefully because some forest roads are narrow and steep. fs.usda.gov/r08/ozark-stfrancis
We stayed over Memorial Day weekend with our family and had the BEST experience! We rented an RV for 3 adults and 3 kids, and it was the perfect size with plenty of room for everyone. Everything was super clean and fully stocked — pillows, bedding, and honestly anything you could possibly need was included. But our absolute favorite part was the outdoor kitchen. I genuinely don’t think we can ever rent an RV again without one now! The griddle was AMAZING and made cooking so easy and fun. We’ve officially become bougie RV campers now. 😂 Could not have asked for a better stay. Highly recommend!

Great experience. Tina is very kind. Done exactly what she said she would do. Trailer was well stocked. Driver explained in detail to my son everything he needed to know about the trailers sewer & water. If you are thinking of renting a trailer for a family member from out of state don’t hesitate. We had a great weekend and my son’s family had a great place to rest.

Lake Fort Smith State Park, AR, United States
The park sits along U.S. Highway 71 near Mountainburg, about 25 miles north of Fort Smith (roughly a 35 minute drive) and about 45 miles south of Fayetteville (around an hour). RVers should note that the approach along old U.S. 71 through the Boston Mountains includes winding two-lane sections with steep grades and tight curves; Interstate 49 offers a more forgiving alternative for larger rigs, with an exit near Mountainburg. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Fort Smith Regional Airport (FSM), with Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) near Bentonville as a larger option about 75 miles north.
