Lowden State Park, IL, United States
The park is located just east of Oregon, Illinois, about 30 miles south of Rockford (roughly a 40-minute drive) and about 100 miles west of downtown Chicago (approximately two hours by RV). Access is primarily via Illinois Route 2, a winding river road with some narrow shoulders and tree-lined curves that RV drivers should take at moderate speed. There are no tunnels or major mountain passes on the approach, but watch for low-clearance rural bridges and tight turns on secondary county roads. Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Chicago Rockford International Airport are the closest options for fly-and-rent travelers.
Late spring through early fall is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with May, June, September, and early October offering mild temperatures, open campground facilities, and lower humidity than midsummer. July and August bring warm, humid weather and the heaviest campground use, so reservations are advised on weekends. Shoulder-season visits in April and October can be quieter and feature strong fall color along the Rock River bluffs, though overnight temperatures drop and some water services may be reduced.

The Black Hawk Statue overlook is the park's signature attraction, offering a dramatic bluff-top view of the Rock River beside Lorado Taft's 48-foot concrete sculpture. A short paved walk from the nearby parking area makes it accessible to most visitors, and there is room for RVs and tow vehicles in the main day-use lot.
Lowden State Park provides bank fishing access to the Rock River, known for smallmouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, and panfish. Anglers should bring an Illinois fishing license and check current regulations before casting.
A network of short wooded trails threads through ravines and along the river bluff, passing mature oak, hickory, and pine stands. Total mileage is modest, making it a good leg-stretcher for RV travelers breaking up a longer drive.
Several picnic areas with tables, grills, and shelters are spread across the park. Large paved pull-throughs at the main day-use lot make it straightforward to park a Class C or travel trailer for a midday stop.
The wooded bluffs and river corridor attract white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and a range of songbirds, raptors, and waterfowl. Spring and fall migrations are especially productive along the Rock River flyway.
Castle Rock State Park lies just a few miles south along Illinois Route 2 and features a sandstone butte overlook above the Rock River. It pairs well with Lowden for a full day of sightseeing from an RV base camp.
The nearby town of Oregon offers a historic courthouse square, local cafes, and small museums tied to the artists' colony that once surrounded Lorado Taft's Eagle's Nest camp. Street parking can be tight for larger RVs, so consider driving in with a tow vehicle.
My second time renting this one. Great trailer. Very easy and super well equipped. I highly recommend.

This travel trailer was perfect for our camping weekend! Super clean, very spacious and comes with everything that you need. Big bunk beds too. Catherine was very nice and so easy to work with. If renting a travel trailer in the Rockford area, I highly recommend this trailer!

Jerry was great to work with. In addition to being very helpful and thoroughly explaining everything we needed to know about the RV, he was also flexible and accommodating with changes to the pickup and drop-off times. I would definitely rent from him again.
