April through June and September through October offer the most comfortable conditions for hiking and paddling, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and active migratory bird traffic. Late winter, roughly January and February, is peak viewing for bald eagles and is celebrated with the annual Eagle Festival. Summer brings hot, humid days and biting insects in the marshes, so early-morning visits are recommended. Shoulder seasons keep parking lots and trailheads less crowded for RV day-trippers.

Mason Neck State Park, VA, United States
From Washington, D.C., the park is about a 30 to 45 minute drive south via I-95 and U.S. Route 1 to Lorton, then east on Gunston Road and High Point Road. Alexandria is roughly 20 miles north and Richmond is about 90 miles south on I-95. RV drivers should note that the park entrance road is narrow and winding through residential areas, with limited turnaround space at the visitor center, so larger rigs are best parked at nearby Pohick Bay Regional Park and visited by tow vehicle. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), with Dulles International (IAD) also within reach.
