The park is located 65 miles northeast of Redding, California, approximately 1 hour 19 minutes by car via Highway 299 and Highway 89. The nearest town is Burney, six miles south of the park. Highway 89 has a 55-mph speed limit and experiences heavy truck traffic. RVs over 32 feet are not permitted at the park. Redding Regional Airport, 65 miles south, is the nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent options.
Spring (May and early June) and fall (September and October) offer ideal conditions for RV camping, with warm days, cool nights, and manageable crowds. Summer (July and August) brings the warmest weather and driest conditions but experiences peak visitation, with most weekends filling to capacity. A 1.1-mile easy loop trail offers stunning close-up views of the 129-foot Burney Falls and Burney Creek. The well-maintained path features paved sections and steps, making it accessible for most visitors, with an elevation gain of about 170 feet.
Fish for rainbow, brown, and brook trout in Burney Creek or cast for large-mouth bass, carp, and black crappie in Lake Britton. Fly fishing is a popular option from May through October, and fishing is accessible directly from the park.
Launch kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, and motorized boats on the nine-mile Lake Britton. Boat rentals are available through the park's general store on an advanced reservation basis during the regular season.
Hike a section of the iconic Pacific Crest Trail, which passes through the park. The trail provides access to longer routes through Lassen National Forest, with options ranging from short day hikes to multi-day backpacking trips.
Swim and wade in Lake Britton during warm months. Multiple access points around the lake provide opportunities for water recreation and cooling off after hiking.
Observe bald eagles, black-tailed deer, black bears, osprey, and other wildlife from hiking trails and along the shoreline. Bring binoculars and camera for the best wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the park.
