Best time to visit Morrow Mountain State Park

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, with mild Piedmont temperatures, blooming dogwoods in April, and brilliant hardwood color from mid-October into early November. Summer brings warm, humid weather and is peak season for the swimming pool, lake activities, and family campground, so reservations fill quickly on weekends. Winter visits are quieter with crisp hiking weather, though some park amenities like the swimming pool and boat rentals operate seasonally and are closed. Shoulder months like March and late October offer fewer bugs, lower humidity, and easier RV site availability.

Things to do at Morrow Mountain State Park

  • Drive to the Morrow Mountain Summit Easy

The paved summit road leads to a parking area and overlook with sweeping views of the Uwharrie Mountains and Lake Tillery. It is the easiest way to take in the park's signature scenery and includes a picnic area near the top. Long RVs should park at the campground and drive up in a tow vehicle.

  • Hike the Mountain Loop Trail Moderate

The Mountain Loop Trail climbs through hardwood forest to the upper slopes of Morrow Mountain, with the option to summit. It is a moderate workout that showcases the rocky soils and rhyolite outcrops typical of the Uwharrie range. Trailhead parking accommodates standard vehicles best.

  • Paddle Lake Tillery and the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Easy
    RV parking available

The park has a boat launch with access to Lake Tillery and the Yadkin-Pee Dee River. Canoes, kayaks, and small motorboats are popular, and rentals are typically available seasonally at the boathouse. The launch area has trailer parking suitable for boat trailers.

  • Swim at the Park Pool Easy
    RV parking available

A seasonal swimming pool operates near the park's main day-use area during the warmer months. It is a popular family option on hot Piedmont days and is within a short drive of the campground. Day-use parking is generous and accommodates trucks and SUVs.

  • Tour the Kron House Historic Site Easy

The restored 19th-century homestead of Dr. Francis Kron, a pioneer physician and botanist, is preserved within the park. The short walk includes the doctor's office, infirmary, and greenhouse, offering a quick history stop between hikes. Parking is at a standard trailhead lot near the historic area.

  • Fish from the Pier or Shoreline Easy
    RV parking available

Anglers fish for bass, catfish, and bream along Lake Tillery's shoreline and from the park's fishing pier. A North Carolina fishing license is required for those age 16 and older. Pier and shoreline access is a short walk from the boat-launch parking area.

  • Picnic at Morrow Mountain Picnic Area Easy
    RV parking available

Several shaded picnic areas with tables and grills are scattered through the park, including one near the summit and one along the lake. They are well suited for RV travelers wanting a midday break between activities. Larger group shelters can be reserved in advance.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Zack was very helpful and accommodating with all the questions and concerns I had and I would not hesitate to rent from him again. Pick up and drop off was very flexible. The unit was very clean. Everything worked as it should.

Corey and Ashley were wonderful. Very nice RV. Pictures don’t it justice. Obviously well taken care of. I will definitely be renting from them again.

Cannot say enough good things about our experience renting from Corey. Very helpful with the renting process and what to expect. I chose the drop off option and it went very smooth - Corey gave a detailed rundown of the RV making sure I knew the basics. Everything was as described, well maintained, and just what we were looking for for our few days away. Corey was quick to respond when I had any questions and made sure everything was good. Highly recommend renting from Corey!

Morrow Mountain State Park, NC, United States

How to get to Morrow Mountain State Park

The park sits about 40 miles east of Charlotte (roughly an hour's drive) and around 50 miles south of Greensboro via US 64 and NC 24/27 to Albemarle, then NC 740 and Morrow Mountain Road into the park. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers. The final approach climbs and winds up Morrow Mountain Road with tight curves and grades, so larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should take it slowly and watch for low-hanging branches. There are no major tunnels or weight-restricted bridges on the standard route, but GPS shortcuts on rural county roads can be narrow, and drivers should stick to signed state highways.
