Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, is the best window for RV travel, when the chairlift, pool, and full campground services are operating and mountain weather is mild. Summer brings warm, humid days and the busiest weekends, so reservations are essential on holidays. Shoulder months of April and October offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fall color in the Clinch Mountain region. Winter visits are possible for day use, but campground amenities and the chairlift are typically closed.

A scenic chairlift carries visitors from the rim down to the floor of the 850-foot natural railroad tunnel. Boardwalks at the bottom allow close-up views of the cliffs and active rail line. Chairlift parking accommodates RVs in designated lot spaces.
Lovers Leap Trail climbs to a dramatic clifftop overlook of the tunnel and surrounding gorge. The short but steep path offers one of the best panoramic views in the park. Trailhead parking is suitable for most RV setups.
Tunnel Hill Trail is the main route from the visitor center down into the gorge for hikers who prefer walking over the chairlift. The descent is steep with switchbacks and stone steps. Best tackled in cooler weather.
The Cove Ridge Center is the park's environmental education hub with exhibits, classrooms, and ranger-led programs throughout the warm season. It is a good rainy-day stop for families. Paved parking is available nearby.
The park operates a large public swimming pool with a water slide and bathhouse during the summer season. It is one of the most popular family amenities on hot afternoons. Pool parking is within walking distance of the campground.
Purchase Ridge Trail is a wooded ridgeline hike connecting the Cove Ridge area with park interior trails. Expect moderate elevation change and quiet forest scenery with seasonal wildflowers. Good for a half-day outing.
A reconstructed blockhouse near the park interprets the historic Wilderness Road, the gateway used by pioneers crossing into Kentucky. Short walking paths and interpretive signage tell the story of early westward migration. The site has accessible parking.

Natural Tunnel State Park, VA, United States
The park sits off US-23 near Duffield, Virginia, about a 45 minute drive north of Kingsport, Tennessee and roughly 1 hour 30 minutes from Knoxville. Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) in Blountville, Tennessee is the nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips, approximately 50 miles south. RV drivers should plan for winding two-lane mountain roads, steep grades on secondary routes, and narrow bridges in the region, so sticking to US-23 and US-58 is recommended for larger rigs. Watch for low-clearance railroad underpasses on older local roads.
