Best time to visit North Hampton Beach State Park

Late June through August is the prime window, when ocean temperatures are warmest, lifeguards are on duty, and the bathhouse is open. July offers the most reliable warm, sunny weather but also the biggest crowds and tightest parking along Route 1A. Early June and September are strong shoulder months for RV travelers, with cooler air, smaller crowds, and easier access to the roadside parking that RVs need. Winter visits are scenic but limited to walking the beach, as swim facilities close and coastal storms can make Route 1A windy and icy.

Things to do at North Hampton Beach State Park

  • Atlantic Ocean Swimming Easy

Swim and sunbathe on the park's sandy Atlantic beach during the summer season. Lifeguards are typically on duty from late June through Labor Day, and the water is coldest in June and warmest in August.

  • Surf Fishing Easy

Cast from the sand for striped bass, bluefish, and flounder along the open Atlantic shoreline. A New Hampshire saltwater fishing license or registration is required for anglers age 16 and older.

  • Route 1A Coastal Scenic Drive Easy

Drive New Hampshire's 18-mile Atlantic coast along Route 1A, which runs directly past the park. The route links Seabrook, Hampton Beach, North Hampton, Rye, and Portsmouth and is best done in a tow vehicle rather than a large RV.

  • Beach Walking and Tidepooling Easy

Walk the hard-packed sand at low tide and explore rocky outcrops at the ends of the beach. Off-season walks are a quiet way to enjoy the Seacoast without summer crowds.

  • Picnicking on the Seawall Easy

Pack a picnic and relax along the seawall promenade overlooking the Atlantic. Benches and open sand areas are available, though there are no large picnic pavilions on site.

  • Day Trip to Hampton Beach State Park Easy

Head about 5 miles south to Hampton Beach State Park for a larger boardwalk, shops, and the Seashell Stage summer concert series. This area has more parking options suited to passenger vehicles and vans than to full-size motorhomes.

  • Odiorne Point State Park Visit Easy
    RV parking available

Drive about 10 minutes north to Odiorne Point State Park in Rye for rocky shoreline trails, the Seacoast Science Center, and WWII-era coastal fortifications. Odiorne offers larger paved lots that can accommodate smaller RVs and tow vehicles.

How to get to North Hampton Beach State Park

The park lies directly on NH Route 1A (Ocean Boulevard) in North Hampton, about 10 minutes (roughly 6 miles) south of Portsmouth and about 5 minutes north of Hampton Beach. From Interstate 95, most RVers exit at Hampton (Exit 2) or Portsmouth (Exit 3) and follow NH 101 or NH 51 east to the coast, then turn onto Route 1A. RV drivers should note that Route 1A is a narrow, curvy coastal road with tight roadside parking, low stone walls, and heavy summer traffic, so larger rigs are better parked at an inland campground and driven in with a tow vehicle. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Boston Logan International, about 55 miles south, with Manchester-Boston Regional in New Hampshire roughly 50 miles west.
