Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, CA, United States

How to get to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

The park is located 26 miles south of Carmel on Highway 1, about 37 minutes of driving. Monterey is 45 minutes to the north. Highway 1 is the scenic but narrow access road; winter storms can close it for extended periods. Check Caltrans conditions before traveling, especially November through March. RVs are limited to 32 feet in length and 12 feet in height, with trailers limited to 27 feet due to forest vegetation and narrow roads. The Monterey Peninsula Airport, 45 minutes north, offers fly-and-rent options. The Nacimiento-Fergusson Road detour is not suitable for large RVs or during storms.

Best time to visit Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

The best time to visit is from late April through early October, when temperatures are mild (70-75 degrees Fahrenheit), skies are clearer, and crowds are manageable. Spring months (April-May) bring blooming wildflowers and peak waterfall flow from winter rains, making hiking particularly rewarding. Summer (June-August) offers warm, stable weather but brings morning fog and heaviest crowds, especially on weekends. Fall (September-October) provides warm days, clearer skies, and significantly fewer visitors than summer. Winter (November-March) is the rainy season with frequent risk of Highway 1 closures from storms or slides. Book reservations exactly six months in advance during peak demand.

This was me and my boyfriend’s first time renting out an rv. The experience was very perfect thanks to Gustavo. Since the start of this trip me and my boyfriend wanted to take, to celebrate his birthday in the dunes Gustavo was like the only one that was able to help us out on making that possible. His communication was very great. Everytime we texted for a concern he would reply quick. We kept him updated on how everything was going in our trip. Everybody loved the rv. Gustavo is a really nice and very understanding person. We’re going to be taking more trips very soon again!
