Late May through mid-October is the best window for RV travel, with the campground open, roads clear, and summer temperatures typically in the 70s F. Early to mid June is a highlight thanks to the wild azalea bloom near Berry Pond. September and early October bring cool nights, fewer bugs, and strong Berkshire foliage, making shoulder season attractive for RVers who want quieter sites. Winter access is limited to day-use recreation, and interior roads including the route to Berry Pond are not maintained for vehicles.

Berry Pond is a small mountaintop pond near the summit of Berry Mountain, reached by the Berry Pond Circuit auto loop. It is one of the highest natural ponds in Massachusetts and offers picnic areas, a primitive campground, and panoramic Berkshire views. The narrow, steep road is best for cars and very small RVs; park larger rigs at the lower lots and drive up in a tow vehicle.
The azalea field is a rare upland stand of native pink azaleas that peaks in early to mid June. A short loop trail winds through the flowers and offers interpretive signage. Trailhead parking near the main entrance accommodates day-use vehicles.
The Taconic Skyline Trail is a long ridge-top multi-use trail that runs north to south along the Taconic Range through Pittsfield State Forest. Hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians use the trail for day trips and longer through-hikes, with connections to neighboring conservation lands. Sections are rocky and moderately strenuous.
Lulu Brook and the Parker Brook area offer streamside picnicking, shaded walking paths, and access to the lower campground loops. The gentle terrain is family friendly and close to RV-accessible parking. Trails here link up to climbs toward Tilden Swamp and the ridge.
Tilden Swamp is a quiet wetland near the ridge reached by interior forest trails. The loop offers wildlife viewing, wildflowers, and a remote feel within minutes of the main entrance. Expect rolling terrain and some wet footing in spring.
Pittsfield State Forest offers miles of dirt roads and singletrack open to mountain bikes. Riders can combine forest roads with the Taconic Skyline Trail for long, hilly loops with ridge views. Bring a map, as trail junctions can be confusing.
In winter the forest transitions to non-motorized snow use on many trails, with ungroomed skiing and snowshoeing on the lower loops and fire roads. Day-use parking near the entrance is typically plowed. Campgrounds are closed, so this is a day trip only.
Berry Pond supports small-scale fishing and cartop paddling in a quiet mountaintop setting. Anglers target stocked trout and warmwater species, and non-motorized boats can be hand-launched. Access is via the Berry Pond Circuit Road during the open season.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

Cliff was great to work with. Very responsive and took his time explaining the camper’s functionality. Delivered earlier than expected and made sure all was situated prior to leaving.

Pittsfield State Forest, MA, United States
The forest entrance on Cascade Street is about 10 minutes west of downtown Pittsfield, roughly 2.5 hours (135 miles) from Boston via the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) and US 20, about 45 minutes (35 miles) from Albany, NY, and around 3 hours (150 miles) from New York City via the Taconic State Parkway. RVs must avoid the Taconic State Parkway, which prohibits commercial vehicles and trailers, and should use I-90 or US 7 instead. Interior roads in the forest, especially Berry Pond Circuit Road, are narrow, steep, and winding with tight switchbacks, so larger motorhomes and travel trailers should stick to lower campground loops and day-use parking. Albany International Airport (ALB) is the most convenient airport for fly-and-rent trips.
