Things to do at Poe Valley State Park

  • Poe Valley Lake swimming beach Easy
    RV parking available

The sand beach on the 25-acre Poe Valley Lake is the park's main summer draw and is a short walk from the campground. It is open from late May through mid-September during posted hours, with no lifeguards on duty. RV visitors can park at the day-use lot near the beach and dam.

  • Boating and paddling on Poe Valley Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Poe Valley Lake allows electric motors and non-powered boats, making it ideal for kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats. A boat launch and seasonal boat rentals serve the lake, and the calm water suits beginners. The launch parking lot accommodates trailers and tow vehicles.

  • Fishing for stocked trout Easy
    RV parking available

Poe Valley Lake and Big Poe Creek are stocked with trout by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Anglers also pursue bass, panfish, and pickerel from shore, the dam, and small boats. A current Pennsylvania fishing license and trout permit are required.

  • Lakeside Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The Lakeside Trail is a gentle path that follows the shoreline of Poe Valley Lake and connects the campground, beach, and boat launch. It offers easy walking with lake views and is suitable for most ability levels. The trail is short and well-suited to a quick post-dinner stroll from camp.

  • Mid State Trail access Strenuous

Pennsylvania's long-distance Mid State Trail passes through nearby state forest land and is reached from forest roads close to Poe Valley. Day hikers can sample rugged ridge sections with views over Penns Valley. Trailhead pull-offs are small, so larger RVs should leave the rig at camp and shuttle in a tow vehicle.

  • Big Poe Creek to Poe Paddy connector Moderate

A scenic forest road and trail follows Big Poe Creek east to neighboring Poe Paddy State Park, where Penns Creek and the historic Paddy Mountain railroad tunnel await. The route is popular with hikers and cyclists looking for a longer outing. RVs should remain at Poe Valley while exploring this corridor.

  • Wildlife viewing and photography Easy
    RV parking available

The remote valley supports white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, and a variety of songbirds and raptors. Early morning and dusk near the lake and meadows offer the best opportunities for photography. Stay alert on forest roads where wildlife crossings are common.

We had a fantastic experience renting this RV! It was exceptionally clean and exactly as described. You can tell the owners put a lot of thought into making it feel warm, cozy, and inviting—it really felt like a home away from home. One thing we especially appreciated was all of the little extras they included. There were so many practical kitchen items and everyday essentials that ended up coming in handy when we realized we’d forgotten something. Things like extra utensils, a strainer, and other thoughtful touches made our trip much easier and more enjoyable. Overall, this was an outstanding rental, and we wouldn’t hesitate to rent from them again. Highly recommended!

How to get to Poe Valley State Park

Poe Valley sits about 25 miles southeast of State College, roughly a 45 to 60 minute drive on a mix of paved and gravel state forest roads. From Harrisburg the trip is about 90 miles, and from Williamsport about 60 miles, with University Park Airport in State College the closest airport for fly-and-rent travelers. RV drivers should note that the most direct approaches use unpaved Bald Eagle State Forest roads with steep grades, sharp turns, and seasonal soft spots, so larger rigs are better routed in via paved roads through Coburn and Poe Paddy. Trailers and motorhomes should avoid winter and early spring travel on the forest roads, when frost heaves, mud, and ice are common.
