Summer is hot and humid with strong sun and biting insects, and the Gulf hurricane season runs June through November, which can affect coastal travel plans. How to get to Powderhorn State Park

The park sits on the west shore of Matagorda Bay off State Highway 35 near Indianola, about 15 to 20 minutes from Port Lavaca and roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by RV from both Houston and San Antonio via US 59 and SH 35. Roads in the area are flat coastal two-lane highways with no tunnels or mountain grades, but low-clearance railroad crossings, narrow shoulders, and wind off the bay are common concerns for larger rigs. Fuel, groceries, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Port Lavaca and Victoria. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent travelers are Victoria Regional, Corpus Christi International about 2 hours south, and Houston's airports about 2.5 to 3 hours northeast.
