Winter brings wintering whooping cranes and waterfowl to the bay and prairie. Summer is hot and humid with strong sun and biting insects, and the Gulf hurricane season runs June through November, which can affect coastal travel plans. The ranch fronts miles of Matagorda Bay with tidal flats, oyster reefs, and salt marsh. Shoreline vantage points offer views of bay fisheries, dolphins, and wading birds.

Just minutes from the park, the ghost town of Indianola on Matagorda Bay marks a 19th century port destroyed by hurricanes. Historical markers, a La Salle monument, and bay access make it a worthwhile stop for RV travelers.
Matagorda and Espiritu Santo Bays are well known for redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. Public boat ramps in Port O'Connor and Magnolia Beach provide the easiest water access for visiting RVers.
Magnolia Beach is one of the few free drive-on beaches on the Texas coast and sits minutes from Powderhorn. It offers bay swimming, beachcombing, and overnight RV parking with a vault toilet but no hookups.

Powderhorn State Park, United States
The park sits on the west shore of Matagorda Bay off State Highway 35 near Indianola, about 15 to 20 minutes from Port Lavaca and roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by RV from both Houston and San Antonio via US 59 and SH 35. Roads in the area are flat coastal two-lane highways with no tunnels or mountain grades, but low-clearance railroad crossings, narrow shoulders, and wind off the bay are common concerns for larger rigs. Fuel, groceries, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Port Lavaca and Victoria. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent travelers are Victoria Regional, Corpus Christi International about 2 hours south, and Houston's airports about 2.5 to 3 hours northeast.
