River Road Provincial Heritage Park, MB, Canada
The park lies roughly 25 to 30 km north of downtown Winnipeg, about a 30 to 40 minute drive via Main Street and Highway 9, with River Road itself branching off Highway 9 near St. Andrews. From Selkirk it is a short 10 to 15 minute drive south on Highway 9. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, approximately 40 km away. River Road is a narrow, winding heritage route with low-clearance trees, tight shoulders, and limited turnaround space, so large motorhomes and trailers should plan to park at Lower Fort Garry or Captain Kennedy House lots and explore on foot or by tow vehicle.
Late May through September offers the most comfortable weather and the fullest access to heritage buildings, tea rooms, and interpretive programs along River Road. July and August bring warm temperatures ideal for riverside picnicking, though summer weekends near Lockport can be busy. Shoulder months of May and September provide cooler driving conditions, fewer crowds, and colorful foliage along the Red River. Winter visits are possible for scenic drives, but most heritage sites are closed and road conditions can be icy.

St. Andrews Rectory is a historic stone rectory built in the 1850s that now serves as an interpretive centre for the Red River Settlement. Exhibits explore the lives of Anglican missionaries, Indigenous communities, and early settlers along the river.
St. Andrews on the Red is the oldest stone church in Western Canada still in continuous use, dating to the 1840s. The adjacent churchyard contains graves of prominent Red River Settlement figures and is open for self-guided visits.
Lower Fort Garry is a preserved stone Hudson's Bay Company fort at the south end of River Road, operated by Parks Canada. Costumed interpreters bring the fur-trade era to life inside original nineteenth-century buildings.
Hay House is a stone ruin of an early settler home that offers a quiet stop along River Road. Interpretive signage explains the building's history and its connection to the Red River Settlement.
Twin Oaks is a historic 1850s home built as a girls' boarding school and later a private residence. The exterior and grounds can be viewed from River Road, with interpretive signage describing its role in early Red River education.
The Lockport area at the north end of River Road offers views of the historic St. Andrews Lock and Dam, a century-old navigation structure on the Red River. The adjacent riverfront is popular for sightseeing, fishing, and pelican watching in summer.
Frank was fantastic to book with - responsive and helpful! The unit was a perfect fit and well appointed for our family meet-up trip where family came from other parts of Canada to meet up in Winnipeg and on one chilly night we had enough room to bring 6 adults inside for a game of Password out of the wet/cold weather. It was a perfect experience all around! Thank you, Frank! We highly recommend booking with Frank!
