Late June through August is the prime window for RV travel, with warm lake temperatures, open swimming beaches, and full campground services. Early fall is a strong shoulder season because the famous Salmon River run brings excellent fishing and crisp, bug-free weather. May and early June are quieter but cooler, with lake breezes that can still feel chilly. Winters are harsh along eastern Lake Ontario thanks to heavy lake-effect snow, so overnight camping is limited to the warm season.

The Salmon River empties into Lake Ontario next to the park and is one of the most famous salmon and steelhead fisheries in the eastern United States. Fall Chinook and coho runs draw anglers from late summer through November, and the park offers shoreline and river access points. RV anglers can base out of the campground and drive a short distance upstream to popular pools.
The park features a sand and pebble beach along Lake Ontario with designated swimming areas in summer. Lifeguards are typically on duty during peak season. Picnic tables and pavilions sit just above the bluff for easy lunch stops between swims.
A park boat launch on Grindstone Creek gives paddlers and small-boat anglers easy access to the protected creek mouth and out to Lake Ontario. Kayakers enjoy exploring the sheltered wetlands before venturing into open water. Parking accommodates tow vehicles and small trailers.
Several miles of trails wind through the park's mixed hardwood forest, open fields, and along the Lake Ontario bluff. The paths are mostly flat with gentle elevation changes, making them accessible for families and casual hikers. Trailheads are located near the day-use and campground areas with RV-friendly parking.
Selkirk Shores lies along the Atlantic Flyway and is known for spring and fall bird migration along the Lake Ontario shoreline. Waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds can be observed from the bluff and in the wetlands near Grindstone Creek. Binoculars and a field guide are recommended for visits during migration windows.
The park has multiple picnic pavilions and open shoreline areas with tables and grills available for day visitors. Several pavilions can be reserved in advance for groups, and RV day-use parking is available in the main lots. Sunset views over Lake Ontario are a highlight after dinner.
Although camping is closed in winter, the park stays open for day use with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing nearby. Trails are ungroomed and conditions depend on heavy lake-effect snowfall. Visitors should check road conditions before driving in from I-81.
Kip was fantastic! Very responsive, flexible on delivery and pick up timing, and right on time! It took a lot of stress out of our travel to have someone so reliable. The RV was spacious and they set up an outdoor rug, chairs and a table for us. They also had bedding available. Highly recommend!

Selkirk Shores State Park, NY, United States
The park sits just off NY Route 3 near Port Ontario, about 8 miles west of Pulaski and I-81 Exit 36. Syracuse is roughly 45 miles south, about an hour by RV, and Watertown is about 45 miles north. Syracuse Hancock International Airport is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers. Approach roads are flat and RV-friendly with no tunnels, mountain passes, or weight-restricted bridges of concern, though winter lake-effect snow can close local routes quickly outside the camping season.
