  • Tour the Historic Shot Tower Easy
    RV parking available

Visiting the stone shot tower is the park's signature activity. The Shot Tower still stands overlooking the New River, preserved as part of a Virginia State Park. Interpretive signage explains how molten lead was dropped from the top of the tower to form round shot.

  • New River Trail Hiking and Biking Easy
    RV parking available

The adjacent New River Trail State Park is a 57-mile rail-trail that passes directly by the Shot Tower. Hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders can access it from the park's trailhead area. The flat, crushed-stone surface is well suited for families and casual riders.

  • Paddling and Tubing the New River Moderate

The New River flows past the base of the Shot Tower and offers calm stretches ideal for tubing, canoeing, and kayaking. Outfitters in nearby Foster Falls provide rentals and shuttles. Water levels are generally best from late spring through early fall.

  • Fishing the New River Easy
    RV parking available

Anglers target smallmouth bass, muskie, catfish, and sunfish in the New River near the park. A valid Virginia freshwater fishing license is required. Shore access is available from day-use areas and along the New River Trail.

    RV parking available

The park includes shaded picnic areas near the tower with views down to the New River. It is a convenient stop for RV travelers taking a break off I-81. Tables, restrooms, and short walking paths make it family friendly.

  • Jackson's Ferry Historical Marker Easy
    RV parking available

The park interprets the site of the former Jackson's Ferry, an early New River crossing. A state historical marker stands along Route 52 near the ferry's original location. It makes a short, informative stop when paired with the tower tour.

What a fantastic experience for us first time RVers! Levi was so patient in explaining everything to us. He even made a special trip to help us out with something we didn't understand. The setup and pack up was easier than expected. The RV was just the right size for us. We look forward to doing this again!

How to get to Shot Tower Historical State Park

The park lies in southwestern Virginia off U.S. Route 52, roughly 15 miles south of Wytheville and Interstate 81 (about a 25-minute drive). Roanoke is approximately 90 miles east, about a 90-minute drive via I-81, and Bristol is roughly 75 miles southwest. RV drivers should note that U.S. 52 includes winding, two-lane mountain sections with grades as it descends toward the New River, so take care with longer rigs and trailers. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA), with Charlotte Douglas (CLT) as a larger hub option about three hours south.
