Late spring through early fall is the prime window, with May, June, September, and October offering warm but comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and active marina operations. Midsummer brings peak crowds, humidity, and biting insects near the creek, so midweek stays are easier on RV travelers. Shoulder months are ideal for paddling Mattawoman Creek and cycling the Potomac Heritage route. Winter is quiet, with reduced hours and limited camping services.

Smallwood is the southern trailhead for a 16.4-mile Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail segment that ends at Piscataway Park, across the river from Mount Vernon. The route follows back roads past Mattawoman Natural Environment Area and Chapman's Landing. home.nps.gov/pohe/planyourvisit/s-md-smallwood-to-piscataway.htm

Anglers launch from Sweden Point Marina to fish Mattawoman Creek and the tidal Potomac for bass, catfish, and panfish. Shoreline fishing is also possible near the marina area. nps.gov/places/smallwood-state-park.htm
Great host will consider using though with would select a smaller less luxurious vehicle. Was an excellent first-time experience.

Smallwood State Park, MD, United States
Smallwood State Park is about an hour south of Washington, D.C. (roughly 40 miles) via Route 210 and Route 225, and approximately 1.5 hours from Baltimore. The final approach on Sweden Point Road is a narrow rural road, so larger RVs should take it slowly and watch for low-hanging branches. There are no tunnels, mountain passes, or steep grades of concern on the main route. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), with Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) and Dulles (IAD) also within reasonable driving range.
