Best time to visit St. Catherine State Park

Late June through August offers the warmest weather, full campground operations, and the best conditions for swimming, boating, and fishing on Lake St. Catherine. Early September is a strong shoulder-season choice for RV travelers, with cooler nights, smaller crowds, and the start of fall color in the surrounding hills. Late September into early October brings peak foliage in western Vermont, though the campground typically closes for the season around Columbus Day weekend. Spring visits can be wet and buggy, so mid-summer and early fall are generally the most comfortable windows.

  • Boating and Paddling on Lake St. Catherine Easy
    RV parking available

Lake St. Catherine has a public boat launch at the park suitable for motorboats, kayaks, and canoes. The long, narrow shape of the lake makes for easy paddling along sheltered shoreline coves, and rental boats are sometimes available on site in summer.

  • Warm-Water Fishing Easy
    RV parking available

Lake St. Catherine is a productive warm-water fishery stocked and managed by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. Anglers target largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, and panfish from boats or from the shoreline near the park.

  • Hike the Park Nature Trails Easy
    RV parking available

Short interpretive and nature trails inside the park wind through mature forest and open meadow near the campground. They are gentle, family-friendly walks that highlight the park's former farmland history and native tree species.

    RV parking available

The park's day-use area offers picnic tables, grills, and a picnic shelter near the beach with lake views. It is a convenient stop for RV travelers who want a midday break without setting up a full campsite.

  • Birding Along the Shoreline Easy
    RV parking available

The mix of lake, wetland edge, and second-growth forest at the park attracts songbirds, waterfowl, and raptors throughout the warm season. Early mornings from the beach area and the nature trail are the most productive times for casual birders.

  • Day Trip to Historic Poultney Easy
    RV parking available

The village of Poultney is a short drive from the park and offers local shops, restaurants, and slate-industry heritage sites. It is an easy off-park outing when weather limits lake activities.

Arrived at the campsite, and was completely amazed at the setup. Griddle, two burner camper stove, two portable tables with table tops, cooking accessories, plastic ware, coffee pot (with coffee), two chairs and table by the campfire. Absolutely amazing! All my family members staying at the campsite were just as amazed and commented on the setup. Michele & Will completely knocked it out of the ballpark. It was in even the smallest of details. Campfire color packets, marshmallow toasting forks, and table top candles. That was just on the outside. Inside the camper was clean & spacious. Beds were ready to sleep on. 100% percent setup inside and out. They even coordinated with the campground to set everything up the day prior to my arrival! Michele walked me through the camper and explained everything in detail. She mentioned more than once to contact her if I had any questions. We had initially communicated a year ago just after the booking, and kept in communication right up to the initial walk through at the campsite. Don't know what more to say other than my experience with Michell and this rental far exceeded my expectations. Family members were "WOW'ed" just as much!

Our first time renting or using an RV and it was an absolutely wonderful experience thanks to Michele and Will. Michele was quick to communicate and went the extra mile to make sure we had a good experience since we were driving in from several states away. Even for a few days which were in the mid-90s were a breeze thanks to the great A/C. Our kids had a great time. Definitely will look to use them again the next time we're in Upstate NY!

I recently had the pleasure of staying in Lien's camper van for a music festival in Vermont, and I can't emphasize enough how perfectly it met my needs. My four essential requirements for the stay— a clean environment, a comfortable bed, a bathroom, and quality coffee—were not only satisfied but exceeded in every aspect, transforming my experience into one of sheer comfort and enjoyment. In fact, I enjoyed my stay so much that I’ve already booked for next year's festivities! Lien proved to be an exceptional host, embodying warmth and hospitality throughout my stay. She communicated effectively and was always available to address any questions I had, ensuring I felt welcome and well-informed. Her clear instructions prior to my arrival made the check-in process seamless, and she generously took the time to provide a thorough tutorial on the van's systems, which truly enhanced my experience. Furthermore, Lien went above and beyond by supplying plenty of pillows, blankets, and fresh spring water, which added thoughtful touches to my stay. Her attention to detail made all the difference, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the festival atmosphere without any worries. I wholeheartedly recommend her camper van as the perfect 'home away from home' for solo travelers or couples alike. If you're looking for a convenient, comfortable, and fun place to stay, look no further! You won't be disappointed!

How to get to St. Catherine State Park

The park is in Poultney, Vermont, roughly a 30 minute drive southwest of Rutland via US 4 and VT Route 30, and about 1 hour 30 minutes northeast of Albany, New York, via US 4. Drivers approaching from the east should be prepared for moderate mountain grades crossing the Green Mountains on US 4, while the VT 30 approach from the south is a gentler valley route that suits longer RVs and trailers. There are no tunnels or major weight-limited structures on the direct approach, but narrow shoulders and winter frost heaves are common on secondary roads. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Albany International Airport (ALB) in New York, with Burlington International Airport (BTV) a longer option to the north.
