Best time to visit Stony Brook State Park

Late June through early September is the prime window, when the swimming pools are open, the campground is fully operational, and the gorge trails are dry and safe. July and August bring the warmest water and the busiest weekends, so midweek arrivals are easier for larger RVs. Shoulder months of May, June, and September offer cooler hiking weather and thinner crowds, though pool access and some facilities may be limited. The park campground typically closes for the winter season.

Things to do at Stony Brook State Park

  • Gorge Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The Gorge Trail is the park's signature hike, climbing stone stairs past waterfalls and shale cliffs along Stony Brook. The route connects the three swimming areas and crosses the creek on stone footbridges built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Expect wet, uneven rock steps.

  • West Rim Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

West Rim Trail follows the high ground above the gorge with forested views down into the creek below. It pairs with the Gorge Trail for a loop that avoids retracing the stone steps. Grades are gentler than the gorge but the footing is rooty.

  • East Rim Trail Easy
    RV parking available

East Rim Trail runs along the opposite side of the gorge and connects the campground area with the day-use core. It is a quieter route through hemlock and hardwood forest with occasional overlooks of the creek.

  • Stream-Fed Swimming Pools
    RV parking available

Three stone swimming pools built into Stony Brook are a defining feature of the park. Fed directly by the creek, they are staffed by lifeguards during the summer season and sit a short walk from the main parking lots. Water stays cool even on hot days.

  • Picnic Areas and Pavilions Easy
    RV parking available

Shaded picnic areas line the creek near the lower entrance, with tables, grills, and reservable pavilions. The setting makes it an easy midday stop between hikes or swims. Several pavilions are within short walking distance of RV-friendly parking.

  • Tennis and Playfields Easy
    RV parking available

The park maintains tennis courts and open playing fields near the main day-use area. These add low-key recreation for families camping multiple nights. Courts are first come, first served.

  • Day Trip to Letchworth State Park Easy
    RV parking available

Letchworth State Park, often called the Grand Canyon of the East, is about 30 miles north and makes an easy day trip from a Stony Brook base. Its deep gorge, three major waterfalls, and scenic overlooks complement a Stony Brook itinerary. Leave the RV at camp and drive in a tow vehicle if possible.

How to get to Stony Brook State Park

Stony Brook State Park sits about 3 miles south of Dansville, New York, just off Route 36, with easy access from Interstate 390. From Rochester it is roughly a 50-mile, one-hour drive south; from Buffalo it is about 75 miles and 90 minutes east; and from Corning it is around 45 miles north. The approach roads are rolling rural highways without major RV hazards, but the park entrance and internal campground roads are narrow and wooded, so long rigs should take turns slowly and watch for low branches. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC).
