Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, offers the warmest, driest weather and the calmest seas for beach days and easy RV driving on coastal roads. Summer brings the biggest crowds at Westport, so weekdays and mornings are quieter. Shoulder seasons in April and October can be excellent for surfing swell and uncrowded beaches, with cooler temperatures and increased chance of rain. Winter visits are popular for storm watching and the gray whale migration, but expect wind, rain, and slick beach parking.

Westhaven is widely considered the top year-round surf spot in Washington, with consistent Pacific swell breaking just south of the Westport jetty. The sheltered Half Moon Bay area is a popular zone for beginners and longboarders, while advanced surfers head to the jetty.
This paved 1.3 mile path links Westhaven State Park with Westport Light State Park and the historic Grays Harbor Lighthouse. The trail is level, stroller and wheelchair friendly, and well suited to casual walking or cycling from an RV parking area.
The wide sandy beach at Westhaven is a classic Pacific Northwest beachcombing spot, especially after winter storms and during low tides. Visitors find shells, sand dollars, driftwood, and occasional glass floats.
Westhaven is one of the best places on the Washington coast to watch winter Pacific storms roll in. Massive waves crash against the Westport jetty, drawing photographers and weather enthusiasts from October through March.
The jetty and beach offer shoreline viewing of migrating gray whales, typically March through May as the animals head north toward Alaska. Bring binoculars and watch for spouts just beyond the surf line.
The adjacent Westport jetty and nearby marina provide saltwater fishing and crabbing opportunities, including salmon, rockfish, lingcod, and Dungeness crab. A Washington state fishing license is required, and seasons vary by species.
Steady onshore breezes and a broad flat beach make Westhaven a favorite spot for kite flying, sandcastle building, and family picnics. Picnic tables and restrooms are available in the day-use area.
