Best time to visit Woods Island State Park

Late June through early September is the best window, when Lake Champlain is warm enough for swimming and paddling and the island's seasonal campsites are open. July and August bring the most stable weather and calmest mornings for the open-water crossing. Shoulder-season trips in May, early June, and September can be rewarding for RVers at mainland basecamps, but lake winds are stronger and the island facilities are typically closed outside the summer season.

Things to do at Woods Island State Park

  • Paddling to Woods Island Moderate
    RV parking available

Kayaking or canoeing to Woods Island is the classic way to visit, with launches from St. Albans Bay and Kamp Kill Kare offering 3 to 4 mile crossings. Plan for early-morning starts when Lake Champlain winds are lightest.

  • Primitive Island Camping Moderate

Woods Island offers a small number of remote, reservable tent sites spread around the shoreline for a quiet overnight stay. Campers must carry in all gear, water, and firewood and pack out all trash.

  • Shoreline Exploration Trail Easy

A rustic perimeter footpath loops around the island through mixed hardwood forest and along rocky beaches. It is a short, easy walk ideal for stretching legs after the paddle over.

  • Swimming and Beachcombing Easy

Small natural beaches on the island's leeward side offer clear-water swimming in midsummer. There are no lifeguards or facilities, so swim at your own risk and wear water shoes on the rocky shore.

  • Fishing Lake Champlain Easy
    RV parking available

The waters around Woods Island hold smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, and yellow perch. A valid Vermont fishing license is required, and most anglers fish from boats near the island's drop-offs.

  • Day Trip from Burton Island State Park Easy
    RV parking available

Burton Island, reached by passenger ferry from Kamp Kill Kare, pairs well with a Woods Island visit and offers a nature center, trails, and a marina. RVers can basecamp at Kamp Kill Kare area campgrounds and make it a two-island day.

  • Wildlife and Bird Watching Easy

The undeveloped island is prime habitat for great blue herons, ospreys, bald eagles, and migrating waterfowl. Bring binoculars and scan the shoreline snags and open water.

We had a great holiday aboard Le Nomade! Perfect condition, comfortable, drives really well. Cleanliness and communication were impeccable. Sébastien was super quick to respond to the couple of questions we had along the way, and very helpful. The back hitch was a real bonus, as it allowed us to attach a bike rack and open up those possibilities. We have AirBnB-ed travel in recent years and the experience was on par with our best Superhost interactions! Highly recommend this vehicle, and the RVezy process is very straightforward.

How to get to Woods Island State Park

Woods Island has no road access and must be reached by boat, usually launched from St. Albans Bay, Kamp Kill Kare State Park, or Kill Kare boat access, roughly 3 to 4 miles across open water. The nearest towns are St. Albans (about 10 minutes from the launch) and Burlington (about 45 minutes south via I-89), which also has the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers. RVers should plan to park the rig at a mainland campground or day-use lot, since the island itself has no parking, no services, and no vehicle access. Watch for low clearances and weight-posted town roads near the lakeshore, and note that Lake Champlain crossings are weather dependent, so avoid launching small boats in high wind.
