How to get to Yakima Sportsman State Park

The park sits just east of the city of Yakima off Interstate 82, with access from Keyes Road near the Yakima River. Seattle is roughly 145 miles west, about 2.5 to 3 hours via I-90 and I-82 over Snoqualmie Pass, while Portland is about 190 miles southwest via I-84 and US-97. RV drivers should be prepared for Snoqualmie Pass elevations near 3,000 feet, with steep grades, chain-up areas, and possible winter closures, and should check weight and length limits before using secondary canyon routes like SR 821 through Yakima River Canyon. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Yakima Air Terminal (YKM), with larger options at Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) and Portland International (PDX).

Best time to visit Yakima Sportsman State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly April through October, is the prime window for RV travel, when the cottonwoods and lawns are green and daytime temperatures are comfortable. July and August are the warmest and busiest months, with hot, dry conditions ideal for river time but limited shade relief in the afternoon. Shoulder seasons in April, May, September, and October offer cooler nights, fewer crowds, fall color, and excellent birding.
