Campgrounds and RV parks near Hardisty, AB

The Battle River valley shapes most outdoor activity around Hardisty: paddling, shoreline fishing, and walking trails along the river bottom. Many activities at Big Knife Provincial Park are water related and include canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and power boating. The best way to experience Big Knife Provincial Park is by heading out on the two hiking trails, which help visitors discover the badlands, Battle River, and forests. At Vermilion Provincial Park, campers can walk, bike, or ski the trails, watch for birds and wildlife, or paddle in the reservoir. Gooseberry Lake Provincial Park leans toward birdwatching and family play: trails on foot or by bike and a spray park are available, and the lake is an excellent place to see waterfowl and shorebirds, including the threatened piping plover. Golfers can pair a round with a campsite at Forestburg Golf Club & RV Park.

The practical RV season around Hardisty runs from the May long weekend through Thanksgiving in October. Provincial campgrounds follow this pattern closely: the ideal time to visit Big Knife Provincial Park is between mid-May and early September, when the campgrounds are open and the weather is favourable. Gooseberry Lake Provincial Park is best from May to October, with vibrant summer months and crisp fall days, and access is closed from mid-October to early May. July and August are the warmest and busiest stretch, when long daylight hours and reliable highs make lake swimming and paddling comfortable. June sees the highest rainfall, with a mean value near 89 mm, so expect thunderstorm risk and soft ground at unserviced sites. The day-use spray park at Gooseberry Lake opens as of July 1. Late September and October bring cool nights, fewer bugs, and shoulder-season quiet. Winter camping is limited to a handful of self-registration pull-through sites at Vermilion Provincial Park; most other parks close completely once water systems are shut down.

Sites in this region are generally spacious and set among aspen, poplar, and spruce, with a mix of open and treed loops. Vermilion Provincial Park has 124 sites, 70 with power, 6 with power and water, and 19 with power, water, and sewage hookups. Gooseberry Lake Provincial Park has 18 campsites with power and water that are reservable online, and an additional 32 unserviced sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Big Knife offers playgrounds, picnic areas, fire pits, water, dry toilets, a gazebo and a boat launch, with showers and a dump station at Vermilion. RVs and trailers up to 50 feet in length, including the tow vehicle, can be accommodated at Gooseberry Lake. Cell coverage is reliable near towns and Highway 13 but spotty in river-valley sites. High populations of Richardson's Ground Squirrel exist at Vermilion Provincial Park, and campers will encounter them mainly in the campground and picnic areas, so food and bags should be stored securely.
