Campgrounds and RV parks near Deer Lake, NL

The Humber River system dominates local recreation. Sir Richard Squires Memorial Provincial Park is built around Big Falls, where Atlantic salmon can be seen leaping the falls between May and August on their upstream migration to spawn. The park has three camping loops and gravel park roads suitable for cycling, hiking, and boat rentals for licensed anglers. Within an easy drive, Gros Morne National Park delivers fjord boat tours on Western Brook Pond, the Tablelands geology walk, and long-distance hikes. Closer to town, Grand Lake offers paddling and swimming, and the Newfoundland Insectarium and Deer Lake Beach are family-friendly stops on a rest day. Wildlife spotting for moose, snowshoe hare, beavers, and red squirrels is common along quieter roads at dawn and dusk.

The practical camping season in the Deer Lake area runs from the May long weekend through the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend in October. Sir Richard Squires and other provincial parks open under the ParksNL system in late spring, and Gros Morne's front-country campgrounds follow a similar pattern, with most services concentrated between late May and early September. July and August are peak. Days are warm, salmon are running, and Gros Morne trails and boat tours are fully operational. Reservations at popular sites can be tight, especially on weekends and around long weekends. June is quieter but buggier, with black flies and mosquitoes at their worst in the boreal forest. September brings cooler nights, fall colour along the Humber, and thinner crowds. Outside these months, expect limited services, closed water systems, and cold, wet conditions. Winter camping is not the norm; most private parks and all ParksNL sites shut down, and Green Point in Gros Morne stays open by self-registration with the water shut off, a pit toilet available, and a reduced fee.

Provincial park sites in this area are unserviced. Expect a gravel pad, picnic table, fire ring, and shared water taps, with a central comfort station for flush toilets, showers, and laundry. A dump station is available at Sir Richard Squires. Water taps carry precautionary boil-order signage, which is standard for provincial parks without chlorination systems. Cell coverage is patchy once off the Trans-Canada Highway. Sir Richard Squires provides a Wi-Fi hotspot at the comfort station, and some Gros Morne campgrounds have limited Wi-Fi, but travellers should not count on reliable data at the campsite. Pets are welcome on leash at both provincial and national park campgrounds. RV length matters: Berry Hill, Trout River, and Shallow Bay cap RVs at about 11 metres (35 feet), while Green Point is limited to about 8 metres (27 feet).
