Campgrounds and RV parks near Fort McPherson, NT

Fort McPherson is a hamlet in the Inuvik Region of the Northwest Territories, located on the east bank of the Peel River and about 121 km south of Inuvik on the Dempster Highway. The community sits deep in the subarctic, and RV travellers reach it by driving the gravel Dempster from Dawson City, Yukon. The majority of residents are Teetl'it Gwich'in, and the community was originally the site of a Hudson's Bay Company trading post named for Murdoch McPherson. Campground options in the immediate area are limited to one territorial park. Nitainlaii Territorial Park sits on NWT Highway 8 about 1 km north of the Peel River ferry crossing, 9 km south of the hamlet of Fort McPherson and roughly 195 km from Inuvik. The campground is perched on a cliff overlooking the Peel River, surrounded by stands of white birch and white spruce, and serves as a common overnight stop during a long trip along the Dempster Highway. Because services are sparse this far north, most RV renters treat Fort McPherson as a fuel, resupply, and rest point between Eagle Plains and Inuvik rather than a base camp.

There is no internet access at Nitainlaii Territorial Park and no online reservations. Campsites are available by self-registration on arrival, so RV renters should plan to pull in during daylight, choose a site, and complete the registration envelope on-site rather than expecting to book ahead through a portal.
