Campgrounds and RV parks near Glace Bay, NS

The Cabot Trail loops around northern Cape Breton and is the main draw for most RV visitors, with lookouts, hiking access to Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and whale-watching stops along the coast. Closer to Glace Bay, the Cape Breton Miners Museum offers guided tours into a former coal mine, and the Fortress of Louisbourg reconstructs an 18th-century French fortified town. On-water options are strong. The Mira River is a slow-flowing waterway that suits canoes and kayaks, with a public boat launch inside Mira River Provincial Park and swimming beaches at MacLellans East and West Bays. Anglers can fish the river with a valid Nova Scotia licence. Families staying at the North Sydney / Cabot Trail KOA have access to on-site recreation including a playground and pool.

The Cape Breton camping season is short. Most private and provincial campgrounds operate from around Victoria Day weekend in late May through mid-October, with Mira River Provincial Park typically running from late May to mid-October and Arm Of Gold Campground operating from early June to mid-October. Private parks near the ferry terminal generally follow a similar window. July and August bring the warmest weather and the busiest bookings, with average highs around 20 degrees Celsius and cool evenings. This is peak Cabot Trail season, when whale-watching tours run and the Fortress of Louisbourg is fully staffed. Expect fog, wind, and passing rain even in summer, particularly along the coast. September and early October deliver cooler nights, hardwood colour along the highlands, and fewer crowds, but overnight lows drop and some campground services scale back. Winter camping is not available at the region's serviced parks; Mira River has no winter facilities and parking is at the gate only.

Site setups vary. Mira River Provincial Park has 156 open and wooded overnight sites, of which 97 are unserviced and 59 have water and electric, plus walk-in sites and shoreline sites for paddlers. Wi-Fi is limited near the park office. Private parks such as North Sydney / Cabot Trail KOA and Arm Of Gold Campground offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, pull-through sites, laundry, showers, and dump stations. Cape Breton weather is changeable. Coastal fog, wind, and rain can move in quickly, so layered clothing and rain gear are essential even in July and August. Leashed pets are permitted at most parks in the area. Cell coverage is reliable near Glace Bay and Sydney but can weaken along the Cabot Trail and in wooded park interiors.
