Campgrounds and RV parks near Cap-aux-Meules, QC

The archipelago is built for slow exploration by RV. The 22-kilometre Dune-du-Sud beach next to Chalets Camping des Sillons offers swimming, beachcombing, and red sandstone cliffs carved into small sea caves at low tide. Cap-aux-Meules island itself centres on the harbour, with viewpoints from the quay and the Cap Hérissé lighthouse. Kayaking and sea-cave tours run out of several islands during summer. Cycling between dunes on the connecting causeways is popular thanks to flat terrain and constant sea views. Kite-surfing, clam digging, and visits to local smokehouses and cheese makers round out a typical week. The Pointe-de-l'Est National Wildlife Reserve protects dunes and lagoons on the northern islands.

The operating window is short. Most campgrounds and chalets on the Îles-de-la-Madeleine open in early June and close in late September, mirroring the CTMA ferry's peak schedule. July and August are the busy core of the season, when reservations for both the ferry and on-island sites are essentially mandatory and typically need to be booked many months in advance. Chalets Camping des Sillons applies its high-season rates between late June and early September. Spring on the archipelago is cool, with snow patches lingering into May and fishing boats out at sea by mid-spring. June is quieter but still cool, with water temperatures climbing slowly. Summer brings mild days rather than heat, with August water temperatures in the lagoons reaching around 20°C and warm breezes that persist into September. Fall is short and windy. Strong gusts pick up in September, and tent camping becomes inadvisable on the dunes during high-wind periods. Many sites switch focus to chalets and ready-to-camp units in the shoulder season, which are often available with shorter notice. Winter is mild for Quebec but functionally closed for camping.

Expect wind. Constant breezes shape life on the islands, with average speeds running from roughly 17 to 40 km/h and stronger gusts in shoulder seasons. RVs with large awnings should plan to retract them whenever sites are unattended. Fog is common, particularly in late spring and early summer, and can roll in quickly off the Gulf. Cell coverage is reliable around Cap-aux-Meules and weaker on the outer islands. Sites on the dunes are exposed, sandy, and bright at sunrise, so window shades and sand mats help. Distances between islands are short, but the single connecting road slows down behind cyclists and commercial traffic in peak summer. Grocery stores, fuel, and the main hospital are all clustered on Cap-aux-Meules island.
