Camping near Asbestos, Quebec
Asbestos, officially renamed Val-des-Sources in December 2020, sits on the Nicolet River in Quebec's Estrie (Eastern Townships) region, roughly an hour northeast of Sherbrooke and about two hours from Montreal. The former mining town is the seat of Les Sources Regional County Municipality and serves as a practical base for RV travellers exploring the lakes, cycle paths, and rolling farmland of the Townships.
Most camping options near Asbestos are privately operated lakeside parks rather than provincial sites. Camping Lac Des Cypres and Camping Plage Mckenzie sit on nearby lakes with sandy beaches and family-oriented amenities, while Camping Ile-Marie, Camping Beau-Soleil, and Camping La Detente offer additional waterfront and wooded sites within easy driving range. The Trois-Lacs sector on the edge of town adds a resort lake, a golf club, and a paved cycle path, making the area workable for families who want a short drive between the campsite and town services.
Things to do near Asbestos
Lake activities anchor most trips. Camping Plage Mckenzie sits on Grand Lac Brompton, a roughly 12-kilometre navigable lake, with a sandy beach and rentals for kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, canoes, and rowboats, plus a snack bar and lifeguard-supervised swimming during posted hours. Camping Lac Des Cypres and the other lakeside parks in the area add beaches, swimming areas, and small-boat rentals suited to families. In town, viewpoints overlooking the former Jeffrey Mine, once one of the largest open-pit asbestos mines in the world, make a short, weather-independent stop. The Festival des Gourmands draws visitors in summer, and the regional cycle network connects to vineyard and microbrewery routes across the Eastern Townships.

Private campgrounds in this part of Quebec generally run a fixed season rather than staying open year-round. Camping Plage Mckenzie typically operates from early May to late September, and most Camping Quebec member parks in the region follow a similar May-through-September window. July and August are peak: lakefront sites and ready-to-camp units fill quickly, especially during Quebec's late-July construction holiday and on long weekends. Spring is short and wet, with the average last spring frost in the Sherbrooke area falling near the end of May. Summer days average in the mid-twenties Celsius with warm lake water by July, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Fall brings foliage colour through late September and October before campgrounds close. Winter camping in this immediate area is rare; deep snow, sub-zero temperatures, and seasonal road conditions mean most renters limit trips to the snow-free months.

How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds around Asbestos are booked directly with each park by phone or through their website, and most are listed in the Camping Quebec directory. Lakefront sites with hookups should be reserved well in advance for July and August weekends. If a trip extends to a Quebec national park such as Parc national du Mont-Orford or Parc national de la Yamaska, reservations go through Sepaq's online portal or by calling 1-800-665-6527. Sepaq opens summer camping bookings for its national parks the preceding November, and the full cost of the stay is charged at the time of reservation. A daily access permit or annual pass is required to enter Sepaq parks and can be purchased up to 30 days before arrival.
What to expect on site
Expect compact, family-oriented private campgrounds organized around a lake rather than wilderness sites. Camping Plage Mckenzie is a four-star Camping Quebec park on Grand Lac Brompton with hundreds of sites split between transient and seasonal campers, a supervised beach, organized activities, and sports facilities. Park rules at Mckenzie include an 8 km/h speed limit, one vehicle per site, an 11 p.m. curfew, no glass containers on the beach, and a one-pet-per-site rule with leashes required. The other lakeside parks listed nearby follow broadly similar family-camping conventions. French is the working language at most reception desks, though English is widely understood in the tourism sector.
