Campgrounds and RV parks near Bonne-Espérance, QC

The area combines coastal scenery with deep fishing and whaling history. In 1871, Massachusetts-born William Henry Whiteley invented the cod trap while running a cod and salmon fishing operation on Bonne Espérance Island, near St. Paul's River, and the Whiteley Museum in St. Paul's River documents that history. Activities in the area include hiking, bird and whale watching, iceberg viewing, boat tours, sea kayaking, berry-picking, salmon fishing, and wilderness camping. Across the Labrador line, the Pinware River is teeming with trout and salmon, and small power boats under twelve feet can be launched from the day-use area to travel further up the river. Nearby points of interest include the UNESCO-listed Basque whaling site at Red Bay and the Point Amour Lighthouse. From the shoreline of the Strait of Belle Isle, humpback whales, along with several other species of whales and dolphins, are often spotted by park visitors from late spring to early fall.

The camping season here is short and weather-driven. From late May to mid-September, visitors can immerse themselves in the untouched wilderness at Pinware River Provincial Park, when the weather is most favourable for camping; outside those dates the park is closed and harsh winter conditions can make access difficult. Official park dates run from early June through mid-September, and opening and closing dates can vary due to snowfall, so visitors arriving early in the season should confirm the park is open, since snow can linger in the area well into June and may push back the opening date. Northern Light Inn Campground operates from early June through the end of September. June and early July bring long daylight hours but also peak biting-insect activity inland. Late August and early September offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and a better chance of calm crossings on the Strait of Belle Isle ferry. Iceberg viewing along the strait is typically best in late spring and early summer, while whale sightings peak in July and August.

This is a remote, weather-exposed coast. Expect basic services, limited connectivity, and long driving distances between fuel and groceries. At Pinware River Provincial Park, the park offers 22 unserviced campsites with picnic tables and fire pits, and many of the campsites can accommodate RVs and travel trailers, including large rigs up to 35 feet. A comfort station near the park entrance offers showers and laundry facilities. Northern Light Inn Campground is a gravel park with three-way hook-ups, where the 30-amp sites are back-in and the larger sites are drive-thru, used by many travellers as a one-night staging point before or after the Blanc-Sablon ferry. The campground is about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal in Blanc Sablon, Quebec. Note the time-zone quirk: in summer, Blanc-Sablon stays on Atlantic Standard Time, creating an hour-and-a-half time difference with the rest of Labrador. Pack for cool nights, wind, and biting flies.
