Water activities dominate the area. Thirty-One Mile Lake, on the eastern edge of Bouchette, is a long, deep, clear-water lake popular for canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and motorboating, with a beach and marina at the village. Gatineau Park, an easy drive south, offers swimming at Lac Phillipe, supervised beach areas, paddle craft rentals, and a network of hiking and cycling trails. La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve, north of Bouchette, holds more than 800 kilometres of developed canoe-camping routes across more than 4,000 lakes, the largest paddling network in Quebec. Anglers target walleye, lake trout, and northern pike. Families with younger children gravitate to the campground beaches at Lac de la Vieille and Lac Phillipe for safer swimming and shorter activity loops.

The camping season around Bouchette runs roughly mid-May through mid-October. The Lac Phillipe campground in Gatineau Park reopened in June 2026 after a multi-year renovation, with the season running into mid-October, while La Vérendrye registration centres operate from mid-May to late September. Camping Cantley generally runs mid-May to mid-September. Outside these windows, most front-country campgrounds and reservation services are closed, and many access roads in the wildlife reserves are not maintained. July and August are peak season. Weekends fill quickly, especially around the Canada Day and civic holiday long weekends, and popular waterfront sites at Lac Phillipe and Lac de la Vieille are often booked out months ahead. June brings reliable warmth but also peak black-fly and mosquito activity in the forest. Late August and September deliver cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations. Fall colour typically peaks in late September and early October across the Gatineau Hills. Winter camping is limited to ready-to-camp units in Gatineau Park, and the region sees heavy snow and prolonged sub-zero temperatures from December through February.

Site styles vary widely. Camping Cantley spreads across a large property with roughly 300 sites, including full-service, water-and-electric, and tent-only options, plus pools, a playground, and on-site amenities. Gatineau Park sites at Lac Phillipe include a mix of unserviced tent sites, ready-to-camp tents, and new mini-chalets, with about 30 sites offering electricity and water after the recent renovation; a central sani-dump is available. Lac de la Vieille at La Vérendrye offers three-service sites (water, electric, sewer), ready-to-camp tents, rustic waterfront sites, two sanitary blocks, and a trailer dump station, but many sites are reached via long gravel roads. Cell service is patchy north of Gatineau and unreliable inside the reserve. Bears are present throughout the region, so food must be stored securely.
