Campgrounds near Dolbeau
Dolbeau-Mistassini sits at the confluence of the Mistassibi River, Riviere aux Rats, and the Mistassini River on Lac Saint-Jean in Quebec's Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. The town is a commercial hub of northern Lac-Saint-Jean, with full grocery, fuel, and RV-supply options before heading out to surrounding campgrounds. Most RV-accessible sites cluster along the lake and the Veloroute des Bleuets cycling loop that rings it.
Camping Mont Plaisant sits on the Lac Saint-Jean shore in the Roberval area, with a heated outdoor pool and water playground geared to families. Camping Chute A Lours, on the Ashuapmushuan River near Normandin, features 252 campsites and 22 cottages alongside river rapids, a heated pool, hiking trails, and direct access to the Veloroute des Bleuets. Pointe Taillon Provincial Park, managed by SEPAQ, anchors the north side of the lake with rustic and cycle-in sites in the Pointe-Taillon, Les Amicaux, and Camp-de-Touage sectors. Coop Camping Chambord and Camping Belley round out the lakeshore options on the south and east shores.
Things to do around Dolbeau
The Veloroute des Bleuets is the headline attraction, a paved cycling loop around Lac Saint-Jean that passes most major campgrounds. Trailers for a bike ride with children are offered free of charge at the Pointe-Taillon rental centre. Park campsites are accessible on foot or by bike at distances of 2, 3, 4, or 20 km, with paddling on Riviere Taillon and Lac Saint-Jean nearby. The Zoo Sauvage de Saint-Felicien, southwest of Dolbeau, is a major boreal wildlife park. Closer to town, the Chute a l'Ours rapids, Mistassini blueberry farms, and the Trappist monastery in Dolbeau-Mistassini are common stops. Kayaking, swimming, and wildlife spotting are all standard activities along the lake.

The Lac-Saint-Jean camping season is short and concentrated. Most private campgrounds around Dolbeau open in late May and close around Labour Day in early September, though Camping Chute A Lours operates year-round with winter snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fatbike access. SEPAQ's Pointe Taillon sectors run on slightly different windows: the Pointe-Taillon sector beach typically runs from June 19 to August 16, with the Camp-de-Touage-Les-Iles sector running from June 12 to September 20. July and August deliver the warmest water and the busiest sites, with Lac Saint-Jean shallow enough to warm up well for a northern lake, which drives demand on lakeshore campgrounds.
Late spring can still see frost and high water on the rivers. September brings cool nights, fall colour, and far fewer crowds but reduced services. Winter closes most road-accessible camping. SEPAQ keeps Pointe-Taillon trails open for snowshoeing from mid-December to early April, depending on snow conditions, though the bike path itself is not maintained.

Booking and reservations
Pointe Taillon Provincial Park is reserved through SEPAQ, the Quebec provincial parks agency, either online at sepaq.com or by phone. A daily park access fee applies on top of the campsite, and an annual SEPAQ card pays off quickly for repeat visits. SEPAQ camping reservations for the upcoming season typically open in mid-November, with canoe-camping in the national parks opening on a later date. Summer weekends, especially during the Quebec construction holiday in late July, fill months ahead, so book as early as the SEPAQ window opens. Private campgrounds including Camping Mont Plaisant, Camping Chute A Lours, Coop Camping Chambord, and Camping Belley take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and most require a deposit to hold the site. Camping Chute A Lours offers sites with 3 services at 50 amp, 3 services at 30 amp, 2 services, and unserviced backcountry pitches, so confirm electrical service and RV length limits before booking.
What to expect
Expect a French-first region. Reservation systems, signage, and on-site staff often default to French, though tourism-facing campgrounds typically handle English. Cell coverage is reliable in Dolbeau-Mistassini and along the main Route 169 loop but thins on rustic SEPAQ sites at Pointe Taillon, where some campsites are reachable only by bike, on foot, or by water. The terrain around the lake is flat, which makes it forgiving for towing and for cycling with children. Mosquitoes and black flies peak from late May through early July, so pack nets and repellent. Lac Saint-Jean weather can shift fast: warm, swimmable afternoons can turn cool and windy by evening, and storms blow across the open lake quickly.
