Campgrounds near Dolbeau-Mistassini
Dolbeau-Mistassini sits at the confluence of the Mistassibi and Mistassini rivers on the north shore of Lac Saint-Jean in Quebec's Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. The town serves as a practical base for RV travellers exploring the lake's northern shoreline, with private campgrounds in the surrounding area and a major provincial park within a short drive.
Camping Mont Plaisant is among the closer options for RV travellers in the immediate area. Camping Chute A Lours, located on the Ashuapmushuan River at Normandin to the southwest, offers serviced sites with direct access to the Véloroute des Bleuets. Heading south along Lac Saint-Jean, Pointe Taillon Provincial Park (Parc national de la Pointe-Taillon) is the marquee destination, managed by SEPAQ and known for sandy shoreline and a flat cycling network. Coop Camping Chambord and Camping Belley sit farther along the lake shore and offer additional serviced and lakefront options.
The region is part of the Véloroute des Bleuets cycling loop, which circles Lac Saint-Jean and links several of these campgrounds. Most sites operate from late spring to early fall.
Things to do near Dolbeau-Mistassini
Lac Saint-Jean is the centrepiece. The lake is unusually warm for its latitude in midsummer, making swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and small-boat outings viable through July and August. Pointe Taillon Provincial Park features kilometres of sandy shoreline and a flat 45-kilometre bike path that runs around the peninsula and links into the Véloroute des Bleuets blueberry trail. Bicycles, canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, and paddleboards can be rented at the park's rental centre.
The park's interior is closed to private vehicles, so exploration is by bike, on foot, or by water. Wildlife watching for moose, beaver, and waterfowl is common in the boreal forest and along the shoreline. In Dolbeau-Mistassini itself, the Trappist chocolate factory is a standard stop, and the Mistassini and Mistassibi rivers running through town offer fishing and short paddling outings.

How to book campgrounds near Dolbeau-Mistassini
Pointe Taillon Provincial Park is run by SEPAQ, Quebec's provincial park agency, and reservations are made through the SEPAQ website or call centre. Summer bookings for the national parks open in early November of the preceding year through staggered time slots, and waterfront sites and ready-to-camp units in popular sectors such as Pointe-Taillon, Les Amicaux, and Camp-de-Touage-Les-Îles can sell out quickly for July and August weekends. A daily park access fee applies in addition to the campsite fee.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Camping Mont Plaisant, Camping Chute A Lours, Coop Camping Chambord, and Camping Belley, are booked directly with each operator by phone or through their own websites. For peak-season RV travel, reserving several weeks ahead is advisable, particularly for serviced pull-through sites.

Sites inside the provincial park range from drive-in RV-accessible sites at Camp-de-Touage-Les-Îles to rustic walk-in or bike-in sites in the Pointe-Taillon sector, with one site accessible only by water.
Roads in the region are paved and RV-friendly, with Route 169 forming the main loop around Lac Saint-Jean. Cell coverage is reliable in towns and patchy in forested stretches. French is the working language throughout the region, though staff at major tourist sites generally communicate in English. Bring bug protection in early summer and layered clothing for cool evenings even in July.
