Campgrounds and RV parks near L'Ascension, QC

Paddling dominates the area. The Rouge and Matawin rivers and lakes inside Réserve faunique Rouge-Matawin draw both day paddlers and canoe-campers, with the Matawin offering rapids suited to intermediate canoeists. Inside Parc national du Mont-Tremblant, Lac Monroe is the hub for swimming, kayaking, and canoe outings, with rentals available at the Lac-Monroe Visitors Centre and Lac-Escalier campground. Land-based options include hiking park trails, climbing the Via Ferrata du Diable, fishing, and cycling Le P'tit Train du Nord linear trail through nearby Labelle. The park is open year-round, and in winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are the main activities in the La Diable and Pimbina-Saint-Donat sectors, with about 26 km of snowshoe trails in La Diable.

The drive-in camping season at Sépaq sites in the area runs roughly mid-May through mid-October. The La Diable campground in Parc national du Mont-Tremblant typically opens in mid-May and closes in late October, while the Pimbina-Saint-Donat sector follows a similar window. Outside those dates, most serviced campgrounds in both the park and the wildlife reserve are closed, though the park itself stays open year-round for day use and winter activities. July and August are peak season. Weekends at Lac Monroe and the La Diable sector book out well in advance. Sépaq opens online reservations for the following summer camping season in November, with high-demand sites going quickly. June brings warmer weather but also black flies and mosquitoes in the forest interior. September into early October delivers fall colour across the maple canopy and noticeably quieter campgrounds. Winter is cold and snowy, with reliable cover from late December through March for skiing and snowshoeing. Spring shoulder season can be muddy, and some trails close during thaw.

Most campgrounds in the Rouge-Matawin reserve are rustic: each site typically includes a picnic table, dry toilet nearby, and fire ring, usually near a lake, but services are limited. Ready-to-camp tents at Lac des Sucreries come furnished and equipped for cooking. Inside Parc national du Mont-Tremblant, the La Diable sector around Lac Monroe offers a fuller range, including some sites with two or three services, washrooms with showers, a visitors centre, and an unsupervised beach. Cell coverage is patchy once off Route 117, and Sépaq specifically advises against relying on GPS for driving directions in its large territories. Wildlife is genuinely present: moose, black bear, and the eastern wolf all live in the area, so food storage matters. Bring bug protection from late May through July.
