Camping near Pontiac, Quebec
Pontiac is a rural municipality in western Quebec, stretched along the north shore of the Ottawa River across from Ottawa and Fitzroy Harbour. Its location puts RV travellers within easy reach of two distinct park systems: Gatineau Park to the east, managed by the National Capital Commission, and Ontario Parks just across the river. Fitzroy Provincial Park has over 200 campsites in two campgrounds, Pine Grove and Two Rivers, with waterfront sites available along the Carp and Ottawa Rivers that bisect the park. On the Quebec side, the Philippe Lake sector of Gatineau Park offers a varied choice of sites for tents, trailers, and canoe-camping, plus ready-to-camp units and fully equipped mini-chalets with electricity. Closer to Ottawa, Wesley Clover Park Campground and Camping Cantley serve travellers who want hookups and quick highway access. Riverbend Park, a family-run riverside campground in Pakenham, rounds out the choices for RV travellers basing themselves in the region.
Things to do near Pontiac
Water and forest define the area. The Ottawa River runs the length of Pontiac, with beaches, boat launches, and fishing access on both shores, including walleye, pike, and bass. Gatineau Park offers swimming at Philippe Lake, paddling, and a large network of hiking and cycling trails. Wesley Clover Park Campground backs onto the Watts Creek Pathway, a 9.3-kilometre trail that connects to the Greenbelt Pathway West and is part of the Trans Canada Trail, putting Parliament Hill within roughly an hour by bike. Downtown Ottawa, the ByWard Market, the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, and the village of Wakefield are all within easy driving range. Families using Riverbend Park can access the river directly for swimming and paddling.

Fitzroy Provincial Park is generally open from early May until late October. Wesley Clover Park Campground operates from early May to mid-October, and Camping Cantley runs a warm-season schedule. Bookings peak around the Canada Day long weekend at the start of July and continue heavy through July and August, when the entire Ottawa region fills up. Spring brings high water on the Ottawa River and occasional flooding of low-lying riverside sites, plus heavy bug pressure from late May into early July. Fall delivers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong colour through the hardwood forests of Gatineau Park. Most campgrounds close once snow arrives, though Gatineau Park itself continues with winter ready-to-camp units accessible by ski or snowshoe.

How to book a campsite near Pontiac
Each park uses a different reservation system, so plan ahead. Gatineau Park summer camping is booked through the National Capital Commission reservation site, with bookings also accepted by phone at 819-827-2020 or in person at the campground based on availability. The NCC opens its summer reservation window in late February each year. Fitzroy Provincial Park reservations are made online or by phone through the Ontario Parks reservation service. Camping Cantley accepts bookings by phone and through its own website. Unserviced site bookings at Wesley Clover Park Campground are only accepted by phone or email through the campground team. Riverbend Park is family-run, with reservations made directly through the campground office. For July and August weekends, book waterfront and electrical sites several months in advance.
What to expect
Sites range from rustic tent pads to RV pads with electrical and water hookups. Fitzroy Provincial Park has 235 campsites across its two campgrounds, 107 with electrical service and 205 with room for trailers, plus comfort stations, a boat launch, a park store, and a dump station near the park office. No full-hookup sites are available at Fitzroy. Wesley Clover Park Campground offers 50, 30, and 15 amp sites with and without water, serviced and unserviced tent sites, and cedar cabins, with a sanitary dump station and laundry on site. Mosquitoes and blackflies are heavy from late May through early July, so bring repellent and screens. Cell coverage is reliable along the Ottawa River corridor and patchy deeper in Gatineau Park. Most parks restrict outside firewood to prevent the spread of forest pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Pontiac, Quebec, QC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Pontiac, Quebec?
RV rental in Pontiac, Quebec is surprisingly affordable for such a scenic part of the Outaouais. Travel trailers typically run around $120 CAD per night, while motorhomes average about $200 CAD per night, with most hosts offering 10 to 20 percent off for weekly or monthly bookings. To find a cheap RV rental in Pontiac, aim for shoulder seasons like late May or September when prices dip and the Gatineau Hills are still stunning. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and compare travel trailers against Class C motorhomes, since towables often deliver the best value if your host offers delivery. Booking three to four weeks ahead of summer weekends usually locks in the best rates along Route 148.
destinationpontiac.ca/en/What license do I need to rent an RV in Pontiac, Quebec?
Good news: your regular Class 5 driver's licence (or equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Pontiac, Quebec. No special RV licence, air brake endorsement, or commercial licence is required for the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers you'll find on the platform. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the booking process, so there's no paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside Canada? An International Driving Permit alongside your home licence is a smart add-on for peace of mind at roadside checks. Most first-timers are surprised how simple the requirements really are.
saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/drivers-licenceIs my RV rental in Pontiac protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Pontiac includes RVezy renter protection and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. During booking you choose from multiple renter protection plans based on the coverage level you want, so the decision is yours, not the host's. Each plan bundles physical damage coverage, third-party liability, and roadside support for issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and mechanical breakdowns on backroads like Route 148 or the gravel stretches near Otter Lake. Whether you are heading into Gatineau Park or out to the Coulonge Falls, RVezy's support team is a phone call away. Pick the tier that lets you relax and just enjoy the ride.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Pontiac RV booking?
Booking your Pontiac RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy. That means consistent, fair rules across every listing on the platform. The amount refunded depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and special circumstances like a host cancellation are handled directly by RVezy with a refund or travel credit. Since the Pontiac sees real four-season weather, this consistency matters when plans shift. Full details are in the RVezy Help Centre and your booking confirmation, but the takeaway is simple: you are not locked in the second you click confirm. Book the dates you want and adjust later if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Pontiac, Quebec RV rental?
Absolutely, and the Pontiac is one of the most dog-friendly corners of Quebec. Many hosts list pet-friendly RV rentals in Pontiac directly on their profile, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search. Once you're here, your pup will love the off-leash trails along the Ottawa River, the beaches at Lac Phillipe in nearby Gatineau Park, and the wide-open shoulders of the Trans-Canada Trail through Shawville and Bristol. Most local campgrounds, including Pine Lodge in Bristol, welcome leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee or shedding policy, and bring a tie-out and water bowl for hot July afternoons when the riverside breeze still feels warm.
ncc-ccn.gc.ca/places/gatineau-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Pontiac?
Yes, RV delivery in Pontiac is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig down Route 148. Many hosts will deliver your RV directly to local campgrounds like Pine Lodge in Bristol, Leslie Park Camping in Otter Lake, or even a private cottage driveway near Quyon. They set up the levelling jacks, connect the hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave, so you can start your trip with a cold drink in hand. Just use the Delivery filter when searching, then confirm the delivery fee and distance with your host. It's the easiest way to enjoy an RV camping Pontiac experience without ever touching the steering wheel.
destinationpontiac.ca/en/tourism/places/leslie-park-camping/How far can I travel from Pontiac in my RV rental?
Pontiac is a fantastic launchpad for an RV road trip into eastern Ontario and western Quebec. Popular routes from Pontiac include Ottawa (about 1 hour, 80 km from Shawville), Mont-Tremblant (roughly 2.5 hours, 220 km), Algonquin Provincial Park (about 3 hours, 240 km), and Montreal (around 2.5 hours, 230 km). Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance with reasonable overage fees, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage if you ask. Always check the listing's mileage policy before booking, and message the host if you are planning a longer Ottawa Valley loop. Pro tip: the scenic drive up Route 148 through Bryson and Fort-Coulonge is a worthwhile detour on the way to Pembroke.
quebec511.info/en/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Pontiac, Quebec?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to the best campgrounds near Pontiac. Pine Lodge in Bristol sits right on the Ottawa River with full hookups and sandy beaches, about 15 minutes from central Pontiac. Leslie Park Camping in Otter Lake offers 205 serviced and unserviced sites beside Leslie Lake, perfect for fishing and mountain biking. Lac Phillipe Campground inside Gatineau Park is ideal for tents and small RVs, with electric sites and a stunning beach. Across the river, Fitzroy Provincial Park in Ontario offers full-service sites just 20 minutes away. Pro tip: book Lac Phillipe sites through the National Capital Commission portal as soon as the reservation window opens in spring, because summer weekends sell out fast.
ncc-ccn.gc.ca/places/lac-philippe-campgroundWhen is the best time to take an RV trip in Pontiac, Quebec?
The sweet spot for an RV camping Pontiac trip is mid-June through mid-September, when daytime temperatures sit between 22 and 28°C and the Ottawa River is warm enough for swimming. July is the busiest and most festival-packed month, while late August into September brings fewer bugs, cooler nights around 10 to 15°C, and the first hints of fall colour. Late September and early October are pure magic in the Gatineau Hills, when the maples turn fiery red and traffic into Pontiac slows down. Winter rentals are limited but possible for snowmobilers and ice fishers who want a heated basecamp. Pro tip: aim for the second week of September for warm days, cool sleeping weather, and shoulder-season pricing.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay on Pontiac's roads?
You will be just fine, and Pontiac is actually one of the friendlier places in Quebec to learn. Roads like Route 148 are paved, well-maintained, and lightly trafficked outside of cottage rush hour, with plenty of pull-offs to stop and breathe. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, propane, water, generator, and slide-outs before you leave. First time renting an RV? Ask for a Class B campervan or a small Class C, which feel close to driving a large van. You can also message hosts in advance with any questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is just a phone call away the entire trip. Confidence comes faster than you think.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong on the road in the Pontiac?
You're never alone out here. Every RV rental in Pontiac, Quebec includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the standard protection package, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and mechanical breakdowns whether you're parked at Pine Lodge in Bristol or rolling through Fort-Coulonge. One phone call dispatches help to your location, even on the more remote stretches of Route 301 toward Otter Lake. Your host is also typically a text away if you have questions about the RV's quirks, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: take a quick photo of the RV's tire size and VIN at pickup so any service call goes faster on backcountry roads.
quebec511.info/en/default.aspxCan I drive my Pontiac RV rental across the border into Ontario or the US?
Crossing into Ontario is easy and common since Pontiac sits right on the provincial border with the Ottawa River as the dividing line. Popular Ontario destinations like Fitzroy Provincial Park, Pembroke, and Ottawa are all standard trips for renters here, with no extra paperwork needed beyond your driver's licence. US travel may be permitted depending on the host and the renter protection plan you choose, so confirm directly with the host and during the booking flow. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you are planning a cross-border loop into upstate New York, message the host before booking so they can confirm coverage and provide the ownership paperwork you will need at customs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Pontiac RV trip?
Fuel is the second-biggest cost after the rental itself, but it's very manageable in the Pontiac. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (about 11 to 13 L/100km), Class C motorhomes get roughly 10 to 14 mpg (17 to 23 L/100km), and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas in the Outaouais region typically runs a few cents above Ontario prices, so a smart move is to top up across the river in Arnprior or Renfrew before heading deeper into Quebec. For a typical 3-day, 400 km loop through Gatineau Park and back, budget around $150 to $250 CAD in fuel for a mid-size motorhome. Pro tip: stations get sparse north of Otter Lake, so fill up in Shawville before heading further.
rncan.gc.ca/our-natural-resources/domestic-and-international-markets/transportation-fuel-prices/4593How far in advance should I book a campground in the Pontiac?
Book early and you will have your pick of the best sites. Lac Philippe and La Peche Lake campgrounds inside Gatineau Park, managed by the National Capital Commission, open reservations in early spring and prime July and August weekends often sell out within days. For provincial parks like Plaisance (about 90 minutes east), use the Sepaq reservation system. Private campgrounds like Pine Lodge in Bristol and Leslie Park Camping in Otter Lake typically accept bookings 2 to 3 months ahead and still have midweek availability into June. Pro tip: if you are flexible on dates, target Sunday-to-Thursday stays in shoulder season, when riverside sites are both cheaper and dramatically quieter, especially around the Coulonge River and Bryson Islands.
ncc-ccn.gc.ca/places/camping-in-gatineau-parkWhat are the driving conditions like around Pontiac, Quebec?
Driving in the Pontiac is refreshingly stress-free compared to big-city Quebec. Route 148 is the main artery, a paved two-lane highway that hugs the Ottawa River with gentle curves, generous shoulders, and light traffic outside of Friday cottage rush. Backroads toward Otter Lake, Rapides-des-Joachims, and the Coulonge River are mostly paved but include some gravel sections, so take it slow in a larger Class C. Winter brings real snow and ice from December through March, and spring thaw can leave potholes through April. Wildlife crossings, especially deer and moose at dusk, are common, so ease off the gas at sunrise and sunset. Pro tip: check Quebec 511 before you leave for any construction zones along Route 148.
quebec511.info/en/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Pontiac?
Campgrounds near Pontiac range from rustic to fully serviced, so you can match your RV to your comfort level. Pine Lodge in Bristol offers 30 and 50 amp electrical, water, sewer hookups, hot showers, and a sandy beach. Leslie Park in Otter Lake has 205 sites with a mix of serviced and unserviced options plus a dump station. Inside Gatineau Park, Lac Phillipe offers electric-only sites with shared water taps, vault toilets, and a swimming beach. Most private campgrounds also sell firewood, ice, and bait. Pro tip: dump stations near Pontiac are limited, so plan to empty tanks at Pine Lodge, Leslie Park, or Fitzroy Provincial Park across the river before heading home to avoid surprises on the drive back.
ncc-ccn.gc.ca/places/lac-philippe-campgroundWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Pontiac?
Local rentals are equipped for real comfort, not just camping survival. A typical campervan rental in Pontiac includes a queen or convertible bed, a 2-burner propane stove, a fridge, sink, and often an indoor wet bath with toilet and shower. Larger motorhome rentals in Pontiac sleep four to seven, with a separate bedroom, full bathroom, dinette, roof-mounted air conditioning, a furnace for cool nights, and a TV. Many hosts include linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, and even a propane fire pit as standard. Wi-Fi varies, so plan on using your phone's hotspot in remote spots near Otter Lake. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list carefully, and message the host if you want a generator for boondocking along the river.
destinationpontiac.ca/en/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Pontiac RV rental?
Hosts in Pontiac offer thoughtful add-ons that make trip planning easier. Common options include bedding and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor BBQs, bike racks, generators, kayaks, and even pre-stocked firewood. Delivery and setup is available from many hosts, often within a 50 km radius covering Shawville, Bristol, Quyon, and into Gatineau Park. Mileage policies vary by listing, with most including 100 to 200 km per day and reasonable overage fees, while some longer-trip hosts offer unlimited mileage packages. Pickup is usually at the host's location, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough included. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a bedding add-on for a true turnkey experience, and ask about dump and refill service for a stress-free dropoff.
destinationpontiac.ca/en/How do payments and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Pontiac?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a credit card to your host. You pay the rental total, taxes, and any add-ons securely online when you book, and a refundable security deposit hold is placed on your card before the trip starts, separate from the booking payment. The deposit amount is shown clearly on the listing before you confirm, and it is released back to you after dropoff assuming the RV comes home in the same shape it left. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a short walkaround video at both pickup and dropoff in Pontiac, especially after gravel roads near Fort-Coulonge or the Coulonge Falls, so any questions are easy to resolve quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow does winter RV camping work in the Pontiac region?
Winter RV adventures in the Pontiac are absolutely doable and can be magical, with snowmobile trails, ice fishing on the Ottawa River, and cross-country skiing through Gatineau Park's 200 km of groomed trails. Some hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces designed for temperatures that regularly hit -20°C in January. You'll want a site with shore power, which Pine Lodge in Bristol and a handful of private parks offer year-round, so you can run electric heaters alongside propane. Filter for winter-ready RVs and message the host about cold-weather tips before booking. Pro tip: pair a winter rental with a day at Nordik Spa-Nature in Chelsea, just an hour away, for the ultimate snow-and-sauna combo.
