Campgrounds and RV parks near Portneuf, QC

The Parc naturel régional de Portneuf is the main draw. Visitors can hike a network of forest trails across multiple sectors, paddle Lac Long and the Noire River, climb cliff faces, and tour Le Trou du Diable, the second-longest accessible cave in Quebec at 980 metres of underground galleries. Inflatable raft rentals cover a 6.6-kilometre stretch of easy rapids on the Sainte-Anne River between Saint-Alban and Saint-Casimir. Three lakes inside the park are stocked with trout in May for family fishing. Beyond the park, the Jacques-Cartier River valley and Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier sit roughly an hour east for whitewater and steep-walled hiking. Old Quebec, Montmorency Falls, and the Aquarium du Québec are realistic day trips along Highway 40 toward the provincial capital.

The camping season in Portneuf is short and concentrated. Most private campgrounds and the Parc naturel régional de Portneuf operate from mid-May through mid-October, with full services typically running late June through Labour Day. July and August are the busiest weeks, when lakes are warmest, trails are fully open, and family-oriented sites can be booked solid on weekends. Late May and June bring blackflies and mosquitoes in the wooded sectors but also stocked-lake trout fishing and quieter sites. September delivers cool nights, fewer bugs, and strong fall colour through the maple and birch stands of the regional park, though some services start winding down after Labour Day. Winters are long and snowy, with snow falling regularly from November to early April and average annual snowfall near Quebec City exceeding three metres. Most RV grounds close for the season, while the regional park shifts to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on a reduced footprint.

Expect a francophone region. Signage, campground websites, and on-site staff communicate primarily in French, though most reception desks handle basic English for travellers. Highway 40 is the main artery, with secondary routes like Route 363 leading north toward Saint-Alban and the regional park. RV sites range from full-service pull-throughs at the larger private grounds to rustic, no-service sites inside the regional park, where generators and self-sufficiency matter. Cell coverage is reliable in town and along the highway but drops off in the deeper park sectors. Bring layers; nights cool quickly even in midsummer. Black bears live in the forested zones, so food should be stored in the RV or in provided lockers. Firewood should be bought locally to limit pest spread.
