Campgrounds and RV parks near Portneuf-sur-Mer, QC

The Portneuf sandbar is the main draw, a long sand spit reached by a short path through a salt marsh behind the village, with views across the channel to the estuary. Binoculars are useful for seals, minke whales, and seabirds. The village marina has a boat ramp and a lookout, and the surrounding beaches stretch for kilometres at low tide. The Cap-de-Bon-Désir Interpretation and Observation Centre, part of the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park and reachable on a short drive south, is one of the best shore-based whale-watching sites on the river, with naturalists on hand during the warm season. Zodiac and larger-boat whale tours depart from Les Bergeronnes and Tadoussac. Bic Provincial Park, across the river, adds sea kayaking, coastal hiking, and seal viewing.

The camping season on this stretch of the St. Lawrence is short and tightly tied to the whale-watching window. Most riverside campgrounds operate from mid-May to mid-October. Camping Paradis Marin in Les Bergeronnes runs from May 15 to October 10, and Camping Bon-Desir operates from May 15 to October 12. Bas St. Laurent KOA Resort across the estuary follows a similar warm-season schedule. July and August are peak weeks, with the warmest weather, the highest concentration of whales feeding in the marine park, and the busiest reservation calendar. June and September are quieter, cooler, and still excellent for wildlife. Bic Provincial Park runs its main camping season from mid-May to mid-October, with yurts in the Île-aux-Amours and Tombolo sectors available year-round and accessible by road through the winter. Outside the warm season, expect snow, frozen ground, and most private campgrounds, restaurants, and tour operators closed.

This is a working coastal region, not a resort strip. Cell service is reliable in villages along Route 138 but spotty between them, and grocery options thin out north of Tadoussac, so stock up before pushing further along the coast. Many sites at Camping Paradis Marin and Camping Bon-Desir face directly onto the estuary and are exposed to wind off the water, and evenings stay cool even in midsummer, so bring extra layers. Drinking water is not available at every unserviced site, so carry potable water. Black-fly and mosquito pressure peaks in June. Roads are paved and RV-friendly along Route 138, but the ferry crossings between the North Shore and Bas-Saint-Laurent fill quickly in summer and should be reserved in advance for larger rigs.
