Saint-Ambroise camping overview
Saint-Ambroise sits in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, on the north side of the Saguenay River and within easy driving distance of both Lac Saint-Jean and the city of Saguenay. RV renters use the village as a quiet base for exploring two distinct landscapes: the sandy beaches and flat terrain along Lac Saint-Jean to the west, and the forested hills and rivers of the Saguenay area to the south.
The closest private campground is Camping Plage Margot, located in nearby Saint-Honore, which keeps RV travellers within minutes of Chicoutimi while offering a sandy lakefront beach. Heading toward Alma and Lac Saint-Jean, Complexe Touristique De La Dam-En-Terre, Camping Au Jardin De Mon Pere, and Camping Belley provide larger serviced sites near the water and the regional cycling network. Pointe Taillon Provincial Park, on the north shore of Lac Saint-Jean, is the area's flagship SEPAQ park and the option many travellers plan their trip around.
Things to do near Saint-Ambroise
The dominant draw is Lac Saint-Jean itself. The lake is a true inland sea whose water warms up quickly in the summer sun, with long sandy beaches at Pointe-Taillon, where swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and beach time are the main activities. The park's cycling network starts just a few steps from the beach and totals 45 km, 16 of which are linked to the Véloroute des Bleuets, a regional route that ties together communities all around Lac Saint-Jean. Families staying at Complexe Touristique De La Dam-En-Terre, Camping Au Jardin De Mon Pere, or Camping Belley can pick up the same bike route closer to Alma. Closer to Saint-Ambroise, Camping Plage Margot offers a beach for swimming and easy day trips into Saguenay for groceries, restaurants, and the Fjord du Saguenay viewpoints.

The camping season in this part of Quebec is short and clearly defined. Private campgrounds typically open in late May and close around Labour Day in early September. Camping Plage Margot operates from late May to early September. Pointe Taillon's seasonal access varies by sector: the Pointe-Taillon beach sector runs roughly from mid-June to mid-August, while the Camp-de-Touage-Les-Îles sector stays open from mid-June into late September.
July and August are the warmest and busiest months, with long daylight hours and reliable swimming weather on Lac Saint-Jean. June can still be cool and buggy, while September brings crisp nights, fewer crowds, and early fall colour in the boreal forest. Winter shuts most facilities, though snowshoe outings are possible on the park's bike path in the Pointe-Taillon sector when there is enough snow cover. RV renters should plan trips between late June and early September for full services.

How to book campgrounds near Saint-Ambroise
Reservations for Pointe Taillon Provincial Park go through SEPAQ, the Quebec parks agency, via its central online reservation system. Summer inventory opens the preceding November in staggered time slots over two days, with Pointe-Taillon among the first parks to open, and the most popular sites sell out quickly, so booking early is important. A SEPAQ access right is required in addition to the camping fee and must be purchased before the visit. Private operators near Saint-Ambroise, including Camping Plage Margot, Complexe Touristique De La Dam-En-Terre, Camping Au Jardin De Mon Pere, and Camping Belley, are booked directly through each campground's own website or by phone. For long weekends and the Quebec construction holiday in late July, reserve several months ahead.
What to expect on site
Private campgrounds in the area generally offer serviced RV sites with electrical, water, and often sewer hookups, alongside tent sites, washroom and shower buildings, and a beach or pool. Camping Plage Margot has 30-amp electrical hookups, water connections, a dump station, an on-site convenience store, showers, laundry, a pool, and a playground. Pointe Taillon is different: the new Camp-de-Touage-Les-Îles sector offers an 80-site campground that can be reached by car and RV, while other primitive campsites are accessible via the bike path along Lac Saint-Jean or by water shuttle on the Péribonka side. RV renters typically stay at the Camp-de-Touage sector or at a serviced private campground nearby and visit the beach sector by bike. Expect mosquitoes and blackflies in June, and bring layers for cool nights.

If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook a comparable RV. Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Saint-Ambroise is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see every host who welcomes furry co-pilots. Many travel trailers and Class C motorhomes in the Saguenay area allow dogs, sometimes with a small cleaning fee. Once you're here, Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay allows leashed dogs in designated areas, and the beach at Plage Belley on Lac Kénogami is a favourite for splashy retrievers. Bring a tie-out, plenty of water, and proof of rabies vaccination. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details and ask for their favourite local dog-friendly spots, they almost always have great recommendations.
sepaq.com/pq/sag/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Saint-Ambroise?
Yes, RV delivery in Saint-Ambroise is offered by many RVezy hosts and it's the easiest way to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Your host will tow or drive the rig to your campground (such as Camping Jonquière or a site inside Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay), level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system from the propane to the awning. Use the Delivery filter when searching and message the host with your campsite address to confirm the fee, which is typically distance-based. Pro tip: delivery is gold if you're flying into Bagotville Airport (YBG), which is about 25 km away, land and head straight to a fully set-up campsite.

transports.gouv.qc.ca/en/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Saint-Ambroise?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Saint-Ambroise. Top picks include Camping Jonquière on Lac Kénogami (full hookups, beach, about 20 km away), Camping Cap-Jaseux in Saint-Fulgence (forested setting overlooking the fjord, about 35 km), Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay Baie-Éternité sector (cliff views, reserve via SEPAQ), Camping Saint-Gédéon on Lac-Saint-Jean (sandy beach, family favourite), and Camping de la Pointe in Métabetchouan. Pro tip: SEPAQ campgrounds inside Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay open reservations in early spring and fill quickly for July and August. Book at sepaq.com as soon as your RVezy dates are confirmed to lock in a fjord-view site.
sepaq.com/pq/sag/sejour/camping.dotWhen is the best time to visit Saint-Ambroise in an RV?
The sweet spot for an RV rental in Saint-Ambroise is mid-June through mid-September, when daytime highs sit between 20-26°C and nights are crisp around 10-14°C, perfect for campfires. July is peak season thanks to long days, and the Festival du Bleuet in nearby Dolbeau-Mistassini is held in early August. September brings spectacular fall colours along the fjord and far fewer mosquitoes. Winters are genuinely cold (regularly -20°C to -30°C) and most campgrounds close, so summer and early fall are the moves. Pro tip: book your motorhome rental in Saint-Ambroise by March if you want July availability, that's when locals start grabbing the best rigs on RVezy.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in the Saguenay region?
You'll be just fine, first time renting an RV in Saint-Ambroise is a common (and great) choice because the roads here are wide, well-maintained, and far less hectic than driving in Montreal or Quebec City. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, propane, slide-outs, waste tanks, and how to back into a site. If you're nervous, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Saint-Ambroise rather than a 30-foot Class A. Pro tip: practice a few turns in a quiet parking lot before heading out on Route 172, and remember your host is just a text away if anything comes up. Most first-timers are surprised how quickly it clicks.
saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/road-safetyWhat if something breaks down during my Saint-Ambroise RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Route du Fjord or the fridge stops cooling at Camping Cap-Jaseux, help is one phone call away. Roadside service handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest service centre. For questions specific to the RV, your host is usually quick to text back, they know their rig inside and out. RVezy's support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the host's driveway, cell coverage is solid in Saint-Ambroise and Chicoutimi but can dip in the fjord backcountry.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Saint-Ambroise RV rental into the US or other provinces?
Many hosts are open to cross-border or interprovincial travel, you just need to ask before you book. Trips into Ontario, the Maritimes, or northern New England (Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire) are popular RV road trip from Saint-Ambroise routes, and many RVezy hosts will approve them as long as the protection coverage extends to the destination. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. To confirm a cross-border plan, message the host directly from the listing with your full route and dates. Pro tip: if you're heading to the US, bring passports for everyone, a copy of the rental agreement, and the host's vehicle registration, the CBSA may ask at the border.
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlWhat's the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip from Saint-Ambroise?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, so let's plan realistically. Most Class C motorhomes in the Saguenay area get 18-25 L/100km, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 15-20 L/100km loaded), and smaller campervans can do 12-15 L/100km. Gas in Saint-Ambroise and Chicoutimi typically runs slightly higher than Quebec City prices, so check current rates at stations along Boulevard Saint-Joseph before topping up. For a 5-day Lac-Saint-Jean loop (about 250 km) in a Class C, budget roughly $120-$180 CAD in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Alma or Chicoutimi rather than smaller villages along Route 169, prices are usually a few cents per litre cheaper at high-volume stations.
natural-resources.canada.ca/energy-sources/fossil-fuels/pricing/transportation-fuel-pricesHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Saint-Ambroise?
Plan ahead and you'll get the best sites. SEPAQ campgrounds (including Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay and Pointe-Taillon on Lac-Saint-Jean) open summer reservations in late winter, usually January or February, and weekend fjord-view sites are gone within hours. Private campgrounds like Camping Jonquière and Camping Saint-Gédéon typically book up 2-3 months ahead for July and August weekends but often have mid-week openings closer to your date. Reserve SEPAQ sites at sepaq.com and private parks directly on their websites. Pro tip: lock in your RVezy rig first, then book your campground the same day. Coordinating both early is the secret to a stress-free Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean summer trip.
sepaq.com/reservation/index.dotWhat are local driving conditions like around Saint-Ambroise?
Driving here is refreshingly relaxed compared to big-city Quebec. Roads around Saint-Ambroise are paved, wide, and generally low-traffic even in peak summer. The main routes you'll use are Route 172 toward Tadoussac, Route 170 toward L'Anse-Saint-Jean, and Route 169 around Lac-Saint-Jean. Watch for moose at dawn and dusk, especially on wooded stretches between Saint-Ambroise and Bégin, and take it slow on the steep grades into the fjord at Sainte-Rose-du-Nord. If you're renting in winter shoulder season, snow tires are legally required in Quebec from December 1 to March 15. Pro tip: avoid driving the fjord cliff sections after dark on your first night, save those dramatic descents for daylight when the views are worth the slow-down.
quebec511.info/en/default.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Saint-Ambroise offer?
Most campgrounds in the Saguenay region are well-equipped for RV camping Saint-Ambroise visitors. At places like Camping Jonquière and Camping Saint-Gédéon, you'll find full hookup sites (30-amp electric, water, and sewer), dump stations, potable water fill-ups, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi near the office, and beach access. SEPAQ sites in Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay offer 2 and 3-service sites at Baie-Éternité, plus more rustic options with shared water taps. Dump stations are easy to find at most private parks and along Route 170. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading to rustic SEPAQ sites, and bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose plus a 30-to-15-amp adapter, two small things that solve 90% of hookup hiccups on your first night.
sepaq.com/pq/sag/sejour/camping.dotWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Saint-Ambroise?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical Class C motorhome rental Saint-Ambroise listing on RVezy sleeps 4-6 and includes a queen bed, dinette and overhead bunk, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelts for travel. Most include a TV, and many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, generators, outdoor speakers, or solar setups as add-ons. Travel trailers offer similar layouts without the cab, and campervans are leaner but nimble for the fjord's tighter roads. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list carefully, and message the host to ask about linens, kitchen kits, and outdoor chairs, many hosts include these for free, which saves a Costco run before pickup.
bonjourquebec.com/en-ca/where-to-go/regions/saguenay-lac-saint-jeanWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for Saint-Ambroise RV rentals?
RVezy hosts in the Saint-Ambroise area offer a friendly menu of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include bedding and towel packages ($25-$60), kitchen kits ($25-$50), generators ($15-$30/night), bike racks, outdoor grills, kayak/canoe rentals, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Saint-Ambroise, Jonquière, or Chicoutimi, and many offer RV delivery in Saint-Ambroise or to nearby campgrounds for a distance-based fee. Mileage policies vary, some include 200-300 km per day, others offer unlimited, so compare during your search. Pro tip: ask the host about a portable propane fire pit. Quebec has periodic fire bans in dry summers, and a propane pit lets you keep that campfire vibe even when open flames aren't allowed.
sopfeu.qc.ca/en/How does payment and the security deposit work for my Saint-Ambroise RV rental?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You pay through the platform with a credit card at the time of booking, no cash is exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup (not charged) and held separately from your booking payment to cover potential damage, excess cleaning, or mileage overages. Once you return the RV in good shape, the hold is released, typically within a few days. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and dropoff with the host, capturing the exterior, slide seals, tires, and interior. It takes five minutes and is the single best way to avoid any deposit-related surprises after your Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean adventure wraps up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a family RV trip from Saint-Ambroise a good idea?
It's one of the best family adventures in Quebec. A family RV trip Saint-Ambroise style means easy access to Parc Aventures Cap Jaseux (treetop courses and via ferrata over the fjord), Zoo sauvage de Saint-Félicien (drive-through wildlife park, about 90 km away), the Village historique de Val-Jalbert ghost town and waterfall (about 80 km), and the sandy beaches of Lac-Saint-Jean for swimming. Kids love whale-watching day trips from Tadoussac (about 2h30 east), where belugas and minkes are commonly spotted in summer. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome with a bunk over the cab, the kids will fight to sleep there every single night, and it frees up the main bed for the adults who need the rest.
