Stornoway camping overview
Stornoway is a small township in Quebec's Eastern Townships, set between the Appalachian foothills and Grand lac Saint-François. RV travellers using Stornoway as a base have two anchor parks within a short drive, both run by Sépaq, Quebec's provincial parks agency. Parc national de Frontenac sits directly on Grand lac Saint-François, with camping sectors arranged around the shoreline. The park straddles the Cantons-de-l'Est and Chaudière-Appalaches tourism regions, and its three sectors are spread over nearly 30 km around the lake.
South of Stornoway, Parc national du Mont-Mégantic anchors a different draw: protected night skies and high-elevation hiking, with summits at Mont Mégantic (1,110 m) and Mont Saint-Joseph (1,075 m). Closer to Lac-Mégantic town, lakeshore campgrounds round out the options for serviced RV sites, beach access, and family amenities. The nearest named campgrounds, in order of proximity, are Baie Sauvage - Frontenac Provincial Park, Camping Baie Des Sables, Camping La Cedriere, Baie aux Rats Musques - Frontenac Provincial Park, and Mont Megantic Provincial Park.
Things to do near Stornoway
Water activities centre on Grand lac Saint-François and Lac Mégantic. At Baie Sauvage - Frontenac Provincial Park and Baie aux Rats Musques - Frontenac Provincial Park, visitors paddle, swim, fish, and launch canoes and small boats. The odd-numbered sites at Baie aux Rats-Musqués offer direct access to the water, ideal for light watercraft. Supervised swimming is offered in the Saint-Daniel sector. Camping Baie Des Sables adds beach access and watercraft options, while Camping La Cedriere serves as a quieter base for exploring the region.
At Mont Megantic Provincial Park, the main draws are summit hikes and the ASTROLab observatory. The park holds a Dark Sky Preserve designation, with rules on artificial lighting that make it well suited to stargazing and northern-lights watching from camp.

The RV camping season in this part of Quebec is short and tightly defined by Sépaq operating windows. Parc national de Frontenac is open from mid-May to mid-October for hiking, equipment rental, and overnight stays, with the campgrounds containing Baie Sauvage and Baie aux Rats Musques operating in that same window. Access roads are open from May through October, and the gates close at the end of October. The park remains accessible to hikers and snowshoers in fall and winter, but no services are available on site outside the operating season.
Summer is the peak window, with warm days, swimmable lakes, and full park programming. Late June through August is the busiest stretch and the time when serviced RV sites book furthest in advance. September brings cooler nights and fall colour through the Appalachian foothills, with frost risk returning by mid- to late September. Private campgrounds around Lac Mégantic generally open in mid-May and close in mid-October, mirroring the Sépaq schedule.

How to book campgrounds near Stornoway
Sépaq sites, including Baie Sauvage - Frontenac Provincial Park, Baie aux Rats Musques - Frontenac Provincial Park, and Mont Megantic Provincial Park, are reserved centrally through Sépaq's online reservation system or by phone at 1-800-665-6527. Camping and ready-to-camp reservations for the following summer typically open in early November, with time slots staggered by park to spread out demand. A virtual waiting room manages the queue at opening, then first-come, first-served applies. Lakeshore and serviced sites for July and August weekends sell out earliest.
Note that Frontenac's sectors are not connected internally. There is no single road linking the various sectors, and no water shuttle service is available, so provincial highways are required to get from one sector to another. Private campgrounds such as Camping La Cedriere and Camping Baie Des Sables are booked directly with each operator; confirm rig length, electrical service, and pet policies at the time of booking.
What to expect at Stornoway-area campgrounds
Expect wooded, lakeside sites with mixed service levels. At Frontenac, RV travellers find a mix of unserviced and two-service sites (water and electricity) arranged in three loops, with spacious and private wooded campsites that can accommodate large RVs. Internal park roads are gravel, so drivers should reduce speed and allow extra time. Visitors centres in both the South and Saint-Daniel sectors handle registration and rent watercraft and bikes.
Private campgrounds along Lac Mégantic tend to be larger and more amenity-rich, with full hook-up loops aimed at family RV travel and direct beach access. At Mont Megantic Provincial Park, the Franceville sector holds the car-accessible serviced sites, with a smaller campground footprint than Frontenac and a reception centre near the bathrooms.
