Water and beach activities anchor most trips. Brightsand Lake Regional Park offers a mile-long sandy beach, a nine-hole sand-greens golf course, a stocked trout pond, and hiking trails with interpretive signs. Makwa Lake Provincial Park connects five lakes across a mixed forest of poplar and jack pine, with three campgrounds, multiple sandy beaches, and six hiking trails. Nearby Steele Narrows Provincial Park marks the site of the final battle of the North-West Resistance and is a short interpretive stop from Makwa Lake.

The camping season in this part of Saskatchewan runs roughly from the May long weekend through the September long weekend. Regional parks near Lloydminster follow similar patterns, with concessions and organized activities running through July and August. June is typically the wettest month in the Lloydminster area, averaging around 86 to 96 mm of precipitation across about 11 rainy days, so shoulder-season trips should plan for showers. July and August are the warmest months and the busiest for beaches, boating, and park events. Fishing on Brightsand Lake, located in the southern fishing zone, opens in early May and runs through the end of March the following year under Saskatchewan's southern-zone rules. Fire bans can be declared at any time by park authorities without notice, and wildfire smoke has affected northern Saskatchewan parks in recent seasons. Winter access is limited: Makwa Lake grooms roughly 15 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, but most regional-park services close after the September long weekend.

Expect a mix of forested, lake-adjacent camping and open prairie sites. Amp levels vary widely: Atton's Lake offers 30 and 20 amp along with non-serviced sites, while Brightsand Lake mixes 30 amp with water, 15 amp electrical, premium 30 amp, and non-electric sites, with a shower house and sani-dump on site. Cell service is unreliable at more remote parks, so download maps and reservations before leaving Lloydminster. Brightsand Lake Regional Park features a mile-long sandy beach, a nine-hole sand-greens golf course, and forested campsites. Dogs are allowed on leash across the regional parks but are typically excluded from beaches and playgrounds, and quiet time in Saskatchewan provincial parks applies 24 hours a day.
